2011 Selene Stakes Results

Elfrida Stronach leads Smart Sting to the winner's circle with jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva aboard.

Date: 09/25/2011

The feature race at Woodbine on Sunday was the $250,000 Selene Stakes (G3) for older fillies and mares going 1 1/16 miles on the Polytrack. Conditions were excellent on the first weekend of the fall season, with sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 70's. As expected, Queen's Plate winner Inglorious was sent off as the 9-10 favorite in the field of 5, exiting her disappointing last place finish in the Alabama Stakes (G1) at Saratoga. In to challenge her included 9-5 second choice Anne's Beauty, winner of her last two starts, the Duchess and the Ontario Colleen (G3), and 5-1 third choice Dynamic Holiday, winner of the Herecomesthebride (G3) at Gulfstream in March but 3rd in the Lake Placid (G2) at Saratoga last out.

Down the stretch with Smart Sting drawing away

Jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva sent 6-1 Smart Sting to the lead first time past the stands and she set easy fractions of 24.98, 49.96, and 1:14.60 over the fast Polytrack while pressed by Anne's Beauty to her outside, with heavy favorite Inglorious stalking them in third. Entering the stretch, Smart Sting pulled away from the competition, drawing off to win by 3 1/2 lengths over Anne's Beauty in 1:43.73. It was another neck back to Inglorious third. Luis Contreras aboard Inglorious claimed foul against Patrick Husbands aboard Anne's Beauty for interference after some bumping at the 70 yard pole, but the claim was disallowed and the original order stood.

Attfield said, "She's been working great on the Polytrack and she's very well right now so why not (take a shot). I said to Eurico in the paddock before the race to just let her run her race. Whatever happens, just let her run, and he gave her a great ride. The filly has a big future, the season's not over yet. Definitely would like to give her the winter off and come back for more next year."

Left: Smart Sting in the post parade. Her jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva said, "Last time, I think I left a little too much for her to do. This time she was there on the front end, just galloping, and she ran a beautiful race. She made it look very easy, but there was another horse there (Anne's Beauty) watching me and it was not that easy. She ran a great race."

Left: Second place finisher Anne's Beauty returns after the race. The 9-5 second choice pressed the pace early under regular rider Patrick Husbands, jostled with the favorite in deep stretch but held on to finish second beaten 3 1/2 lengths. The Paul Attard trainee improved her record to 4 wins, 2 seconds, and 2 thirds in 9 starts, earning $403,559 for owner Robert Smithen.

Right: Third place finisher and beaten favorite Inglorious in the paddock. The 9-10 favorite stalked the pace in third under regular rider Luis Contreras, bumped with Anne's Beauty late, and was outfinished by a neck for second money, 3 3/4 back of the winner. The Josie Carroll trainee improved her record to 5 wins, 1 second, and 1 third in 9 starts, earning $1,307,943 for owners Donna and Vern Dubinsky.

The undercard feature on Sunday was the $103,400 Flaming Page Stakes for older fillies and mares. Originally scheduled for 1 1/2 miles on turf, it was moved to the Polytrack due to the rain-softened E.P. Taylor course. Honimiere was sent off as the 7-5 favorite in the field of 5, unraced since finishing 5th in the R.G. Dick Memorial (G3) at Delaware. Thislilsoulofmine was the 2-1 second choice over 5-2 Happy Clapper.

Jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva sent the favorite Honimiere to the front and she set slow fractions of 26.27, 51.18, 1:16.36, and 1:41.50 while being pressed by Happy Clapper. Into the stretch for the last time, Honimiere began to open up on the field, through 1 1/4 miles in 2:06.25, and finished under wraps 7 1/2 furlogs in front of 4-1 Oregon Lady in 2:31.25. It was another 1 1/2 lengths back to Happy Clapper third.
