Tuesday Kentucky Derby Workouts

Date: 05/03/2011

Tuesday morning it was pouring rain and the track was sloppy at Churchill Downs. Several of the Derby horses stayed in the barn today, so I bypassed the nasty weather and instead will use a few photos from earlier.

Toby's Corner galloped on the Tapeta track at Fair Hill on Sunday with James Slater aboard. Tuesday, it was discovered he has an injury to his left hind leg that will prevent him from running in the Kentucky Derby. This allowed Derby Kitten to get in the field.

Mucho Macho Man gallops over a sloppy track at Churchill Downs. On Tuesday, gallops over a sloppy track at Churchill Downs, although he had never run over a wet track before. Trainer Kathy Ritvo said, "Yeah, it doesn't bother him. He's a cool horse. He does everything so easily."

Stay Thirsty on the inside with three-time Derby-winner Calvin Borel up, edges past older workmate Bridgetown in a five-furlong work at soggy Churchill Downs on Sunday. On Tuesday, he and stablemate Uncle Mo avoided the rain, chill and soggy racetrack to merely walk the shedrow. "It's OK," Pletcher said. "They needed a walk day anyway. We'll go back to the track and train tomorrow. We'll gallop and stand in the gate then; the usual stuff."

Decisive Moment with trainer Juan Arias up, gallops over a sloppy track on last Wednesday at Churchill Downs. Today he walked under tack at Barn 41 at Churchill Downs on Tuesday morning with trainer Juan Arias up. "It was the weather and racetrack, both. I was waiting to go out and when I saw that the weather didn't break by 8:30 I decided to keep him in. He walked for 45 minutes under tack and now he's walking half an hour by hand," said Arias.

Midnight Interlude jogged under exercise rider Dana Barnes last week. Today he walked the shedrow after working a bullet five furlongs in 1:00.80 over a sloppy track on Monday. "All is well," trainer Bob Baffert said.

Pants On Fire heads to the barn after stepping off the van on Sunday at Churchill Downs. Today he took one clockwise lap around the Churchill Downs oval during the Derby-Oaks training session with regular exercise rider Juan Pizarro up in his first visit back to the track.

Archarcharch gallops over the Churchill Downs track for the first time since last fall with jockey Jon Court in the saddle. Today, he trained in company with stablemate Supreme Ruler going a half-mile work in :52 over a sloppy track under jockey Jon Court.

Kentucky Oaks favorite Joyful Victory rolls through the stretch in her five-furlong Monday work at Churchill Downs. She drew post position 1 for the race on Friday.
