![]() Joyful Victory works out for the 2011 Kentucky Oaks. |
The fillies never get the press the boys do, but on Friday they get the spotlight in the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs. On Tuesday the post positions were drawn for the 136th Kentucky Oaks and a field of 13 3-year-old fillies made the entry box for this $1,000,000 Grade 1 event over 1 1/8 miles on the main track. R Heat Lightning, who was expected to be the favorite, was declared from the race Monday with a knee injury.
The 5-2 favorite is Joyful Victory who is owned by Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farms and is trained by Larry Jones with Mike Smith getting the ride. She followed the Oaklawn path to the Oaks, winning both the Fantasy (G2) and Honeybee (G3) there. The co-second choices are Kathmanblu and Zazu. Kathmanblu won the Rachel Alexandra (G3) at the Fair Grounds last out, while Zazu was second in the Santa Anita Oaks (G1).
