The permanent Sovereign Award trophy |
In an effort to promote equal opportunity in determining the winners of the 17 race award categories, the voting closed on January 21, 2024, allowing for statistics for the entire year to be considered. The finalists and eventual winner are determined using a computerized points system based on each voter's first, second and third choice in each category. The judging for the 2023 media categories is performed by media professionals within the industry selected from across North America.
Listed in alphabetical order, the Media finalists are:
Robert "Red" McKenzie will receive the Special Sovereign Award for becoming the oldest trainer to saddle a winner in Canada, doing so at the age of 96 on June 23, 2023 when his mare Entitled Star captured that day’s second race at Century Mile. With his training career dating to earlier than Equibase offers records, it is no doubt his career totals land him well above the 600+ wins and over $3.5M in earnings he has amassed since 1976. Michelle Armata, an employee of trainer Mike DePaulo, will receive the Outstanding Groom Award, while Jennifer Buck, farm manager of Highfield Stock Farm in Alberta, is the inaugural winner oft he Outstanding Off-Track Worker Award.
Below are all the finalists in all the equine and human categories. There are three finalists in each category, except where there was a tie. The three finalists for Horse of the Year honours will be announced on the evening of the awards ceremony.
