2023 Kentucky Derby Future WagerPool Five of the 2023 Kentucky Derby Future Wager is now closed. As expected Hopeful (G1), Breeders' Futurity (G1), and Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Forte is the 3-1 favorite choice for trainer Todd Pletcher. Tampa Bay Derby (G2) winner Tapit Trice, also trained by Pletcher, is the 8-1 second choice followed by the mutuel field of all other 3-year-olds as the 10-1 third choice. You can view the exacta will-pays here. Total handle of Pool 3 was $341,637 of which $250,906 was bet to win and $90,731 in the exacta. Through the first five Derby pools a total of $1,306,177 has been bet.
Note that any horses currently trained by Bob Baffert (or any other suspended trainer) are excluded and cannot earn points toward entering the Derby, however such horses are included in the mutuel field. If they changed trainers by the February 28 deadline, then they can start earning points and be included in later pools as separate betting interests.
In the only Kentucky Oaks Future Wager pool for 2023, which ran concurrent with Derby pool 5, Honeybee Stakes (G3) winner Wet Paint is the 4-1 favorite for trainer Brad Cox over 6-1 second choice Wonder Wheel for trainer Mark Casse, winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) but second in the Suncoast Stakes, and 7-1 third choice Hoosier Philly, third in the Rachel Alexandra (G2) for trainer Tom Amoss. A total of $70,208 was wagered in the Oaks Future with $53,340 in the win pool and $16,868 in the exacta pool.
The Kentucky Derby Future Wager is a two-dollar minimum bet to win only with no refunds if your horse doesn't start in the race with both win and exacta wagering available. Pool 1 was November 1-3, Pool 2 was November 24-27, Pool 3 was January 20-22, and Pool 4 was February 10-12. Pool 6 is set for March 30-April 1. The single Kentucky Oaks Future Wager pool will run concurrent with Derby Pool 5. The 149th running of the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve is currently scheduled for Saturday, May 6, while the 149th running of the Longines Kentucky Oaks is on Friday, May 5.
