The second turf race on the card is the $5 million Dubai Duty Free (G1) for older horses. A full gate of 16 runners contested the 1777 meter (about 1 1/8 mile) trip over the Nad al Sheba turf course, with both Japanese runners, Kyoto Kinen winner Admire Moon and Mile Championship winner Daiwa Major, sent off at the shortest price on the board of 11-2. American hope Lava Man was the 7-1 third choice.

Admire Moon wins the Dubai Duty Free over Linngari.
14-1 Irridescence set the pace down the backstretch under jockey Weichong Marwing and she was stalked by Lava Man and 10-1 English Channel for most of the trip. The Japanese co-favorites sat in mid-pack, Admire Moon saving ground on the rail and Daiwa Major taking a wide trip to avoid traffic trouble. Entering the stretch, Irridescence continued to lead the way as Lava Man put in his bid for the lead, but when asked by Corey Nakatani he faded badly and was eased late, finishing last. Admire Moon found running room and took over the lead at the 1/4 pole as Irridescence weakened. Admire Moon held off late-charging 20-1 Linngari inside the 1/16 pole to prevail by 1/2 a length in a time of 1:47.94. It was a long 4 1/4 lengths back to Daiwa Major in third.

Right: Trainer Hiroyoshi Matsuda, owner Riichi Kondo, and jockey Yutaka Take hold up the framed dagger presented to them. Take said, "He performed quite brilliantly and he was confident coming into the race and was able to ride him accordingly. This horse is getting better with every race and he is definitely one of the best horses in the world and I would like to race him in Europe."

Admire Moon heads back to the barn with his new winner's blanket. On Friday, owner Riichi Kondo said, "We've not come all the way from Japan to take second place. I mean, why would we do that if we were not convinced that he could win here?" Apparently the bettors listened since he was the favorite.

Left: Second place finisher Linngari heads out for the post parade. His jockey Kevin Shea said, "He has run a fantastic race, and we made up a lot of ground, but basically the wide draw (16) beat us."

Right: Third place finisher Daiwa Major, also from Japan, heads to the paddock before the race.

Top US trainer Todd Pletcher had five horses in the races today and his best finish was Friendly Island's 2nd place finish in the Golden Shaheen. He doesn't look like he was having a very good day here as he walks English Channel over to the paddock before the Duty Free. He finished 12th. He did have a good day at Gulfstream Park though, winning five races including the Florida Derby with Scat Daddy.
