On Wednesday at 5:30pm, final entries were taken and post positions were drawn for the 140th running of the $2 million Kentucky Derby (G1). A full field of 20 three-year-olds will go 1 1/4 miles on Saturday at Churchill Downs. 22 horses were entered, with Frammento and Tale of Verve getting in as also eligibles who can draw in the race if someone scratches by 9am Friday.

Unlike the "draft draw" held for several years, Churchill Downs reverted back to the traditional double-blind draw a few years ago. After the numbers were drawn, handicapper Mike Battaglia announced the morning line. As expected, American Pharoah is the favorite at 5-2 and drew post 18. His stable mate Dortmund drew post 8 and is the 3-1 second choice. Carpe Diem is the third choice at 8-1 in post 2 and Materiality and Firing Line are the co-fourth choices at 12-1 from post 3 and 10 respectively.

When asked about his post position, Dortmund's trainer Bob Baffert said, "He's a horse that gets going. He's quick. He'll be right there in the mix. It will be tougher to watch one in there, so whichever one breaks the best I'm going to key on him." As for American Pharoah, who he also trains, he said, "It's OK. It's good. Anything but being down there. We talked about being on the outside. I feel like 20 would have been great for me. Out there at least you have a little bit of an option. He's fast. American Pharoah is fast."

Below is the field listed in post position order with morning line odds. Be sure to click the link on each horse's name to view full info, stats, and a photo where available. A star next to the dosage index indicates a dual qualifier.

The Kentucky Derby will be televised on NBC from 4-7:00pm EDT but you can watch most of the Derby card on NBC Sports Network from 11:00am-4:00pm. Free past performances for the Kentucky Derby will be available here. (scroll down to find the Derby horses for the link) The Kentucky Derby goes off at 6:34pm ET, carded as Race 11 of a 14-race card on Saturday May 2nd.

UPDATE: on Thursday April 30, Stanford was scratched by trainer Todd Pletcher. As a result, Frammento, with jockey Corey Nakatani for trainer Nick Zito, draws into the field taking post 20, while all horses outside Stanford's 11 post will move inward one position. On Friday El Kabeir scratched (foot problem) too late for Tale of Verve to draw in, so they will leave the one hole empty and moved everyone in together, but saddle cloth numbers will not change. On Saturday morning, International Star scratched (also foot problem) and again they will leave post one empty and move everyone one in with saddle cloths still the same. Favorite American Pharoah moves into post 16.
