The Black-Eyed Susan

Date: 05/17/02

With two scratches, including original morning-line favorite Take Charge Lady, a compact field of six went to the post in the Black Eyed Susan Stakes, the second leg of the Filly Triple Crown. When the gate opened, 24-1 longshot Shop Till You Drop was sent to the lead by jockey Harry Vega and posted initial fractions of 23.57, 47.57, and 1:12.41. Stalking her to her inside the whole way around was 3-5 favorite Chamrousse. With a patient rating trip under jockey Jerry Bailey, she made her move at the top of the stretch, dueled briefly with the pacesetter at the 3/16 pole, then drew off to win by 2 1/4 widening lengths stopping the clock in 1:51.61 for the 1 1/8 mile feature. 8-1 shot Autumn Creek followed the pair around the course and finished 10 1/2 lengths back in third. Winning jockey Jerry Bailey said, "I've never ridden her before, but I ride them better that way."
