2020 Belmont Stakes Entries

Date: 06/17/2020

With the global COVID-19 pandemic causing many sporting events to be cancelled, postponed, and/or contested without spectators, horse racing's Triple Crown was not immune. With the Kentucky Derby delayed to September 5 and the Preakness to October 3, the $1 million Belmont Stakes (G1) presented by NYRA Bets was also delayed, but only 2 weeks later, to this Saturday June 20. For the first time in its history the Belmont will kick off the Triple Crown series, when traditionally it has been the final race of the series. As well, its distance was cut from its usual 1 1/2 mile lap of the Belmont main track, down to just 1 1/8 miles, a one-turn trip out of the chute. In addition, as has been the case since New York racing resumed on June 5, the usually packed Belmont Park stands and apron will be empty, with only essential staff, connections, and a limited number of media allowed to attend.

Entries closed and post positions were drawn on Wednesday afternoon for the field of 10 three-year-olds. As expected, New York bred Tiz the Law is the 6-5 morning line favorite from post 8. The Barclay Tagg trainee comes here off wins in the Holy Bull (G3) and Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park. Regular rider Manny Franco gets the call for owner Sackatoga Stable. In to challenge him include 9-2 second choice Sole Volante, winner of the Sam F. Davis (G3) before finishing second in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2). He comes here off an allowance win at Gulfstream on June 10. Luca Panici will be in the irons in post 2 for co-owner and trainer Patrick Biancone and majority owner Reeves Thoroughbred Racing. Dr Post is the 5-1 third choice for trainer Todd Pletcher and owner St Elias Stable. He comes here off a 2 race win streak, his maiden win in March and the listed Unbridled Stakes on April 25. Irad Ortiz Jr. gets the call from post 9.

Live television coverage will be provided from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on NBC, with post time for the Belmont Stakes scheduled for 5:42 p.m. All times are Eastern time zone.

Free past performances are available here from BRISnet.
