A field of 14 will face the starter in the 145th running of the $1 million Belmont Stakes (G1) on Saturday June 8, the final leg of the Triple Crown. Kentucky Derby winner Orb drew post 5 and is the 3-1 favorite on the morning line. Back for a rematch is Preakness winner Oxbow, who drew post 7 and is the third choice at 5-1. Also back from the Kentucky Derby are second place finisher Golden Soul and third place finisher (post 14 at 10-1) Revolutionary (post 9 at 9-2).
Orb's trainer Shug McGaughey said, "I just didn't want to get down on the inside where maybe we might get stuck around the first turn, like we sort of did in the Preakness. I said middle, and that's pretty much the middle."
The morning line second choice is Louisiana Derby winner Revolutionary, who is one of 5 horses entered by trainer Todd Pletcher along with Overanalyze (3), Midnight Taboo (8), Palace Malice (12), and the filly Unlimited Budget (13). Pletcher said, "We were kind of hoping Unlimited Budget would draw toward the outside. I think Palace Malice, maybe, will show some speed, so we're happy to be outside of Freedom Child and Oxbow."
D. Wayne Lukas, trainer of Preakness winner Oxbow, said, "I think we overanalyze [the post position draw] a lot. It's nice for the press to have something to write about today, but, really, at a mile and a half with that long run and the sweeping turns, we have a tendency to overanalyze the post position draw. I'm more concerned about who is around me and what they're going to do than what gate we got."
Post time for the Belmont Stakes will be at 6:36pm Eastern and it will be race 11 on a 13 race card. It will be televised on NBC from 5-7pm EDT, with the undercard stakes shown on NBC Sports Network from 3-5pm, as well as a post race show from 7-7:3pm.
