Although the races are the main event, this is Arlington Park's big day and they have a lot going on to celebrate. Here is a selection of photos from the opening ceremonies as well as other scenic or interesting things from the day.

This rather tall jockey on stilts was wandering around amusing people in the back yard.

Left: The flags of the US, UK, Germany, Ireland, France, and Arlington Park were brought in by skydivers and flown in the winner's circle as part of the opening ceremonies.

They had several things as part of the entertainment and opening ceremonies including the pipe and drum corp and the beefeaters.

Left: These tandem skydivers were just part of the large group skydivers who delivered the flags for the opening cermonies.

Right: The Chicago Boyz Acrobatic Team performed on the track as part of the opening ceremonies.

Left: It is tradition at Arlington for the winning jockey in each race to give his goggles to the children who wait and beg for them.

Right: Track bugler Bonny Brown.

Roy and Gretchen Jackson, the owners of Barbaro, had Showing Up in the Secretariat Stakes and were interviewed several times during the day. Showing Up did win as the heavy favorite.

Hall of Fame jockey Laffit Pincay was at Arlington and presented the trophy for one of the undercard stakes.

This is the trophy that will be given to the winner of the 2006 Emirates Melbourne Cup (G1) in November down in Australia. The design is a three handled loving cup and has looked like this since the 1919 running. The trophy is gold and is valued at $80,000 AUS which is $77,000 US.
