2011 Triple Crown Late Nominations

Date: 03/30/2011

It is just over a month before the Kentucky Derby and while most people are ready to declare Uncle Mo the winner already, there are still a few hoping to defeat him. The final nomination period closed with 13 additional nominees at a cost of $6000 each. Topping the list of new faces is Tampa Bay Derby winner Watch Me Go who has $232,000 in graded earnings and is currently #19 on the earnings list. Others include: Norman Asbjornson, runner-up in the Gotham (G3); unbeaten Smoke It Right, winner of the Mountain Valley at Oaklawn Park; Beer Meister winner of the Turf Paradise Derby; Swift Warrior winner of the Rushaway at Turfway Park; and Joe’s Blazing Aaron, winner of the Palm Beach (G3) on turf at Gulfstream Park. Several of these have enough graded earnings that they have a chance at making the Kentucky Derby field with another start.

The late nomination period is the last chance to get your horse eligible to enter the Kentucky Derby for a reasonable cost. The early nominations, which closed in January, cost $600 and the late nominations, which closed on March 26, cost $6000. At this point, horses can still be supplemented to the Kentucky Derby for a $200,000 fee, or for the Preakness and/or Belmont for "only" $100,000. Entries to the Kentucky Derby are capped at 20 horses and if more than 20 enter, preference is given in order of their amount of graded stakes earnings. Additional fees are $25,000 to enter and $25,000 to start are due if you actually get in. There are no also eligibles taken for the Triple Crown races. You can find out the details of all the costs involved to nominate and enter here.

The early nomination period for the three Triple Crown races closed January 22 and 364 3-year-olds were made eligible for the three-race series at that time. The 13 late nominees bring the overall nomination total for 2011 to 377.
