Woodbine Mile Day Prince of Wales Stakes Del Mar Futurity Del Mar Debutante Pacific Classic Day |

It is just over a month before the Kentucky Derby and things are still so uncertain that the field was the favorite in the final pool of the Future Wager for the first time ever. The final nomination period closed with only 6 additional nominees at a cost of $6000 each. With so many upsets lately, it looks like it will take a pretty high amount of graded earnings to make the Derby field and all 6 of the late nominees will have to win big in their final prep to make it in the race. Topping the list of new faces is Gotham Stakes runner-up Yawanna Twist who has $50,000 in graded earnings and is currently #46 on the earnings list. He will go in the Illinois Derby this weekend and needs to be at least second to have a chance at making the Kentucky Derby field.
The late nomination period is the last chance to get your horse eligible to enter the Kentucky Derby for a reasonable cost. The early nominations, which closed in January, cost $600 and the late nominations, which closed on March 27, cost $6000. At this point, horses can still be supplemented to the Kentucky Derby for a $200,000 fee, or for the Preakness and/or Belmont for "only" $100,000. Entries to the Kentucky Derby are capped at 20 horses and if more than 20 enter, preference is given in order of their amount of graded stakes earnings. Additional fees are $25,000 to enter and $25,000 to start are due if you actually get in. There are no also eligibles taken for the Triple Crown races. You can find out the details of all the costs involved to nominate and enter here.
The early nomination period for the three Triple Crown races closed January 16 and 366 3-year-olds were made eligible for the three-race series at that time. The six late nominees bring the overall nomination total for 2010 to 372.
