Entries were drawn and post positions selected this morning for the 143nd running of the Queen's Plate, the oldest continuously run stakes race in North America. A field of 14 horses was entered with Plate Trial winner Shaws Creek made a lukewarm morning line favorite at 3-1. For the first time a new rule was used that allows horses with the same ownership to run uncoupled in races of $1 million or more, so the two horses from Sam-Son Farm will run as separate betting interests.

Pat Quinn holds the Queen's Plate trophy while the jockeys in attendance reach for it.
This year the honorary drawmaster was Pat Quinn, coach and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Canadian Olympic hockey team. Quinn had this to say about the Queen's Plate: "It’s the biggest sporting event in Canada. One of the things I see similar to my job is dealing with top athletes. It’s the work of the coaches or in this case, the trainers and the jockeys who really bring them along and help them peak at the right time. The thing that will make the difference in this race will be heart for the wonderful athletes that will be running here on Sunday."

Trainer John Ross hangs his silks in post 14, after being drawn to select last.
As in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, the selection order is drawn at random and then the connections of each horse have ninety seconds to announce their post position when called upon after a five minute break for consultation. Favorite Shaws Creek was draw early for the 14th and last selection of posts, which wound up meaning post 14. His trainer John Ross joked about the post: "Jake and I went out, had a big breakfast meeting to discuss our draw strategy and it all came down to picking post 14."
