The fillies never get the press the boys do, but on Friday they get the spotlight in the Longines Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs. On Tuesday the post positions were drawn for the 139th Kentucky Oaks and a field
of 11 3-year-old fillies made the entry box for this $1,000,000 Grade 1 event over 1 1/8 miles on the main track.
As expected, Todd Pletcher-trained Dreaming of Julia, who drew post 8, is the 3-1 favorite, off her 21 3/4 length romp in the Gulfstream Oaks, which was actually run faster than the Florida Derby run later in the card. Regular rider John Velazquez gets the call for owner Stonestreet Stables. In to challenge her included two fillies at 7-2, Beholder out of post 4 and Unlimited Budget out of the 5 hole. Beholder ships in from California off a 2 race winning streak including the Las Virgenes (G1) and Santa Anita Oaks (G1), and Garrett Gomez gets the return call for Richard Mandella. Unlimited Budget is undefeated in 4 starts including the Rachel Alexandra (G3) and Fair Grounds Oaks (G2), and will have Javier Castellano in the irons on Friday afternoon.
