Post positions were selected for the 131st Kentucky Derby on Wednesday afternoon in the Triple Crown Room of the new Jockey Club Suites at Churchill Downs. A full field of twenty made the entry box, with Wood Memorial winner Bellamy Road set as the morning line favorite at 5-2. As in the past, the horses were drawn at random order for a selection order and their connections then picked their post positions.
Arkansas Derby winner Afleet Alex was named the 9-2 second choice and will break from post 12. Trainer Tim Ritchey said, "I thought about choosing post 16 but opted for post position 12 because I think there'll be a little more room there. And, I'm from Pittsburgh and that number has been very good with Terry Bradshaw winning four Super Bowls." Jockey Jeremy Rose, riding in his first Derby, said, "It should work out well. Other than the first two or the last two positions it's really all the same."

Todd Pletcher is looking for his first Derby win and he has 3 horses entered, 20-1 shot Coin Silver in post 5, another 20-1 outsider in Flower Alley out of the 7 hole, and 6-1 third choice Bandini in post 15. Pletcher, who had first pick with Bandini, chose the 15 because "I wanted to be toward to the outside. I like the auxiliary gate; it's won five out of the last ten races. I like the extra space. We wanted to stay clear of the inside traffic. Plus, if there's a scratch you go to 14 and you're in the same position."
