![]() Saratoga Race Course will host the Belmont Stakes again in 2025 |
Once again, the $2 million Belmont Stakes (G1) will not have a horse going for the Triple Crown and will not be run at Belmont Park. Starting last year, the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival (Thursday to Sunday, June 5-8) will be at Saratoga Race Course for at least two years due to construction of a new grandstand at Belmont Park and was shortened from the traditional 1 1/2 miles to 1 1/4 miles due to the track layout. Entries closed on Monday June 2 with a field of 8 entered, including Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty and Preakness winner Journalism back for a rematch.
As expected Kentucky Derby (G1) runner-up and Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Journalism is the 8-5 morning line favorite for trainer Mike McCarthy. Regular rider Umberto Rispoli gets the call again, drawing post 7. Florida Derby (G1) runner-up and Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Sovereignty is the 2-1 second choice. Regular rider Junior Alvarado will be in the irons in post 2 for trainer Bill Mott. The 4-1 third choice is Santa Anita Derby (G1) runner-up and Kentucky Derby (G1) third place finisher Baeza breaking from post 6. Flavien Prat, who picked up the mount in the Derby, retains the ride for trainer John Shirreffs. Completing the top 4 and the last horse at single digit odds is 6-1 fourth choice Rodriguez, unraced since winning the Wood Memorial (G1). Regular rider Mike Smith gets the call for trainer Bob Baffert from post 3.
Mike McCarthy, trainer of favorite Journalism said of post 7, "Looking at where we're drawn, there's a little bit of speed inside of us. Obviously, the horse on outside [Heart of Honor] was a little rambunctious [in the gate] in the Preakness. I see us running into the first turn - all these Triple Crown races have a very honest pace - and I think we'll be forwardly placed. He's been kind of the same horse since July of last summer. He does everything you ask a good horse to do - eats well, trains well, packs well. I thought the last six or seven weeks here, his energy has been the same throughout. Obviously, Saratoga is very good for horses. He seems re-energized up here."
Bill Mott, trainer of second choice Sovereignty said of post 2, "I thought, being a small field of eight horses, I was going to be happy with whatever post position we got. I don't think it's big issue. He's been moving well over the track and eating the bottom out of the feed tub. He's carrying his weight well. I hope he's doing as good on Saturday as he was this morning. He's improved - as many of these horses have. This entire group, if you look at their form and the way they've developed over the course of this year, I think they've made steady progress. It should be an interesting race on Saturday."
John Shirreffs, trainer of third choice Baeza said of post 6, "He's very light on his feet. Everything he does is effortless. I think he's earned respect in his races, he ran a terrific race in the Kentucky Derby – didn't get the best of trips, had a little trouble and was stuck behind, didn't get out soon enough. He would have had, I think, a little bit better run at the end. Post always has a little bit of an influence on what may happen, especially if horses don't break straight. If a horse doesn't break straight and you're on the inside, then they're going to push you down on the rail, so that's the only thing – racing room out of the gate."
Jack Wolf, co-owner of fourth choice Rodriguez said of post 3, "They all say he's doing well and over the foot injury. He's kept some pretty good company before this race. He's run against Journalism and Baeza and Mike Smith's not a bad rider." Trainer Bob Baffert added, "I'm happy with the draw."
Live television coverage on Saturday June 7 will be provided from 2:30-7:30 p.m. on FOX with post time for the Belmont Stakes scheduled for 7:04 p.m., carded as Race 12. All times are Eastern time zone. The undercard will be broadcast on FS1 from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. before the main network show picks up the rest of the stakes action starting with the True North.
