2022 Breeders Crown Entries

Date: 10/25/2022

On Friday and Saturday night, Woodbine Mohawk Park in Campbellville will host all twelve of the Breeders Crown championship races for all the divisions of trotters and pacers, with $6.7 million (US) in purses up for grabs. This marks the return of the event to Southern Ontario after a 3-year-absence, with 2019 being the last time it was at Woodbine Mohawk Park. Eliminations were held this weekend and post positions were drawn for the $600,000 3-Year-Old Colt Pace, the $600,000 Open Pace, and the $600,000 Open Trot at a special dinner event in the Gambrel Barn at nearby Country Heritage Park on Tuesday evening. Celebrating its 39th renewal, the Crown, sponsored by the Libfeld/Katz Breeding Partnership for the 4th straight year, again will be contested over 2 nights, with the four 2-year-old divisions running on Friday and the remaining divisions (four for 3-year-olds and four "opens" for older horses) run on Saturday.

Drawing the posts for the Breeders Crown Open Pace.
The world's fastest Standardbred, Bulldog Hanover, drew post 6 in the overflow field of 11 in the Open Pace, and gets regular driver Dexter Dunn in the bike. Trainer and co-owner Jack Darling said, "I was happy with that [post]. I was a little bit worried about that nine-hole, but I'm really happy with the six. I've had some good horses, but to have a horse like this is a really special thing, and I wish everybody could have a horse like this once in their life. I think it's sunk in because I think I've watched (the record mile) 42 times on TV. He came out of [the Allerage Pace] good. He's had a good week at home and I expect to him to give a good effort this week." He comes here off a rare loss in the Allerage Farms Open Pace at the Red Mile, upset by Brett Pelling trainee Allywag Hanover who faces him again on Saturday from post 3 with driver Todd McCarthy.

The 3-Year-Old Colt Pace will be the third meeting between Pepsi North America Cup winner Pebble Beach and Little Brown Jug winner Bythemissal. Each won his elimination so were guaranteed an inside post (1-5). Pebble Beach drew the 5 for driver Todd McCarthy. Trainer Noel Daley said, "This was the best he's been. He finished it off. Todd said he was like a different horse tonight. I don't know if it was the Lasix that made the difference but tonight, that was even better than he was earlier in the year. He was really sharp during the week here, literally kicking his shoes off in the paddock. So, I'm glad he just finished it off and showed that he's back to form." Bythessimal, who was supplemented to the Crown by trainer Ron Burke, drew the 2. Burke said, "When we were training him down, he did seem like he was better than pretty much anything in the barn, training down, so we knew he was pretty nice. But he has even surprised us. It seems like wherever we go, the more we ask of him, the more he does." Regular driver Chris Page gets the call on Saturday. Page added, "Who would've thought that from there [Little Brown Jug], I would be here talking to you for the Breeders Crown. To win the Jug, that was definitely the top of my bucket list, and this is up there near the top, so we've got to finish next week."
