The lovely view of the San Gabriel Mountains this morning with Juvenile Turf runner Aktabantay

World Championships
Breeders' Cup Workouts

Date: 10/29/2014

Wednesday morning at Santa Anita Park was clear and warmer than earlier, as the horses continued their preparations for the Breeders' Cup World Championships. The main track again was fast and the turf was firm with temperatures in the 80's, and quite a few horses galloped there today including some who only arrived Tuesday afternoon like the Pletcher trainees. The last European horses will finally clear quarantine tomorrow morning, which includes all the Aidan O'Brien runners. Unfortunately, Turf defending champion Magician was scratched. He was found to be lame on his off foreleg in the Quarantine Barn when trotting in the barn. Trainer Aidan O’Brien said, "He was acutely lame in his off fore this morning, and it was an instant decision to take him out of the race." He will be retired and will take up stud duties at Ashford Stud, Kentucky. In addition, Turf Sprint entrant Free as a Bird was scratched when she refused to board her plane.

Here are photos for 37 of the horses from this moring on the track or in the barn area. Click the small picture to see a larger version. Most of the horses for today are different from yesterday, with only a few repeats. Once again we arrived in the pre-dawn darkness, so some of the photos taken before sunrise are a bit dark, but that is beyond my control.

Assistant trainer Alan Sherman said, "He stood in the gate and was perfect. All systems go, He’s performed so well on this track in the past, I’m not worried about the surface. He will go to the paddock tomorrow and jog the morning of the race."

Bayern galloped 1 1/2 miles on Wednesday. Trainer Bob Baffert said of his Classic hope, "If we were coming into this race off the Travers, when he went to the lead and stopped, they might leave him alone on the lead for a while, but since he went wire to wire in (winning) the Pennsylvania Derby, that’s probably not going to happen. He can get the 1 1/4, but at a certain pace. Not going 22 to the 1/4, and they might be doing that."

Majestic Harbor galloped 1 1/2 miles under exercise rider Jack Stack in preparation for the Classic. Trainer Sean McCarthy said, "He’s looking really good and training well. I always like to jog him (on the training track) after a workout. It’s much quieter there."

Tonalist jogged 1 lap and schooled in the paddock under exercise rider Lee Vickers. "The trip across the country went fine," reported Christophe Lorieul, Christophe Clement’s longtime top assistant. "We’re in good shape."

Zivo galloped 1 1/4 miles on the main track. Trainer Chad Brown said of his Classic hope, "He arguably had the best gallop of any of my horses. This horse is training so well. I know it’s going to be a difficult race. I’m concerned about the track and if he can transform that form outside of Belmont. Is the track going to be playing fair on Saturday or is it going to be speed-favoring like most big race days, it seems like everywhere? Can he work a trip out from behind? There needs to be enough pace up front. He couldn’t be doing any better."

Better Lucky was sent to the track for a jog once around under exercise rider Hector Hernandez. Trainer Tom Albertrani said of his Filly and Mare Sprint hope, "She has been so consistent throughout her entire career. She’s an extremely nice mare. In the Shine Again at Saratoga this summer, she closed from 12 lengths back in a 7f race and won. I’m hoping to see another good race from her where she’ll close into what is shaping up to be a strong pace."

Dayatthespa galloped 1 1/2 miles in preparation for the Filly and Mare Turf. Trainer Chad Brown said, "She’s just meant so much to me and my whole staff. She’s really a barn favorite. She’s scheduled to be sold days after the Breeders’ Cup. It will be sad to see her go, but she’s earned it and can go on to the next stage of her life. That would be her second Grade 1 and it depends on what other horses do in the race. She’s very dangerous. She’s got speed and she can carry it. She’s in career form right now."

"Right now, she is the best she has ever been," said Christophe Lorieul, Christophe Clement’s top assistant. "She is a big, good-looking mare and she has been training hard every day. She can be too hard on herself, so it is up to us to keep her this good right up to her race."

Sivoliere galloped 1 1/2 miles Wednesday morning. Trainer Chad Brown said of the Juvenile Fillies Turf entrant, "Sivoliere is a horse that we got the first weekend of September. She had some trouble adjusting her first two weeks over here, I thought, and has since turned the corner and has been coming on better. Her works are OK; she’s not known to be a real fast work horse. She’s one they tell me is looking for firm turf and she’s going to get it here. We’ll just have to see how she does."

"He was a little stiff from the trip, but other than that it went great," trainer Roger Brueggemann said of his Sprint hope. "Today we just had an exercise rider I borrowed from Tom Amoss.  Tomorrow (regular jockey) Florent (Geroux) will be in to gallop him."

Brown Panther worked 3f in 37 1/5 in preparation for the Turf under exercise rider Chris Ely. "He breezed about 5f and enjoyed himself out there, I just let him do his own thing and he was fine. He has taken to the pony that has been accompanying him at exercise really well, and this was the first time that he’s been on his own since he got here, but he was no problem whatsoever," Ely reported.

Imagining galloped "an easy 1 1/4" for trainer Shug McGaughey. The 6yo son of Giant’s Causeway arrived from Belmont Park on Tuesday. "What I’m really kind of excited about is running him over this turf course where it’s a little bit quicker and will carry him a little bit farther than Belmont," McGaughey said. "Here, he can run on top of the ground instead of going right into it. I think it’s something he’ll really like. He kind of made some mistakes in the Joe Hirsch. He came out of the turn on the wrong lead and then switched to his wrong lead and he wasn’t beaten that far. In those kind of races, you can’t take a chance on making those mistakes."

Twilight Eclipse, the world-record holder at the 1 1/2 mile distance of the Turf, handled the cross country trip from New York without incident and jogged once around the track Wednesday morning under exercise rider Hector Hernandez. Trainer Tom Albertrani said, "He’s been a unlucky in that it has rained in the days before his his last three races, which were all G1, and even though he ran very well and just missed by a neck in two of them, he prefers nice firm ground."

Bobby's Kitten galloped 1 1/2 miles Wednesday morning in preparation for the Turf Sprint. Trainer Chad Brown said, "He’s never been down the hill (at Santa Anita). Historically, I think having some experience down the hill is real beneficial. So we're giving that up, but hopefully he makes up for it in just overall talent. I think 6 1/2 should work well for him."

Something Extra went out for a gallop on the main track in preparation for the Turf Sprint.

Sweet Swap jogged a mile and stood in the gate Wednesday morning. The 5yo son of Candy Ride has been off since April, but has experience from 8 races on Santa Anita's unique downhill 6 1/2f course with wins in half of those starts. "He runs well fresh and he's been worse than second only once down the hill, so it's definitely a good race for him," Sadler said of his Turf Sprint horse. "He's more of a sprinter than his full brother Sidney's Candy."
