The Glen Gallivan Special

Date: 03/15/2004

Many of you will remember Glen "Glenners" Gallivan who used to post his Bet Glen 2 Win selections here who passed away suddenly last September. His regular haunt was Tampa Bay Downs where he did the speed figures for Andy Beyer so it was fitting that the track named a race for him on the Tampa Bay Derby card, the Glen Gallivan Special. A group of over 20 friends and family were in attendance, including his mother who presented the trophy to the winner. Click the small photo to see a larger version.

The Glen Gallivan Special was the 12th race on the card, right after the Tampa Bay Derby, a $15,000 start allowance at five furlongs on the turf. The winner was Last Slew, a 5-year-old bay gelding, ridden by Thomas Pompell who completed the race in 56.38, only a tick off the track record.

It was an appropriate memorial for a handicapper that the mutuel pay-offs were hefty.
