Now that the American Triple Crown has drawn to a close, we now shift our focus north of the border as the Canadian classics begin. The Woodbine Oaks Presented by Budweiser offers a purse of $500,000 and features some of Canada's finest 3-year-old fillies. Some nice fillies have won the race in the past such as Wonder Where, Laurie's Dancer, Blondeinamotel, Dance Smartly, and Dance Smartly's daughter Dancethruthedawn. At 1 1/8 miles, it is the first leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara which also includes the Bison City Stakes and the Wonder Where Stakes, also at Woodbine. A $350,000 bonus is offered for any horse who can sweep the series, and Sealy Hill became the first filly to win the Canadian Triple Tiara in 2007.

Drawing the posts with Racing Secretary Steve Lym, honourary drawmaster Chris Bosh, and track announcer Dan Loiselle.
On Thursday at a special noon-hour event, final entries were taken and post positions were drawn for the 54th renewal of the Oaks. Toronto Raptors center Chris Bosh, who was a member of the gold medal winning U.S. Olympic basketball team last year in Beijing, was on hand as the honorary drawmaster. A full field of 14 will face the starter, with 5-2 morning line favorite Wynning Ride breaking out of the 7 hole, shipping in from California for trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Joe Talamo. In to challenge her include 7-2 second choice Tasty Temptation out of post 13 for trainer Mark Casse and jockey Patrick Husbands, and 6-1 third choice Milwaukee Appeal out of post 4 for trainer Scott Fairlie and new rider Stewart Elliott.

Wynning Ride, a $120,000 Keeneland yearling purchase, has one win in four career starts and was runner-up last year to Laragh in the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet. This year she was second in her only start in a 6 1/2 furlong allowance at Hollywood Park on May 14. Her jockey will be 19-year-old Joe Talamo, making his Canadian debut. Trainer Bob Baffert said, "She ran really well last year, but after the Starlet, I gave her some time off. We freshened her up and I've been pointing for this race all along. She's a nice filly. I think she's going to be very competitive and she's coming up to the race really good."

The Budweiser Woodbine Oaks is scheduled as the ninth race on an eleven-race card on Sunday at Woodbine, going to post at 5:10 PM EDT. The whole card will be televised on the Score network in Canada. Free past performances are available from BRISnet.com (Look for Academicienne for the link). On the undercard of the Oaks is the $150,000 Victoria Park Stakes for 3-year-old colts and geldings, and the $100,000 Alywow Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on the turf.
