2022 Whimsical Stakes at Woodbine

Kazushi Kimura and Our Secret Agent head to the winner's circle after the 2022 Whimsical Stakes at Woodbine.

The first graded stakes of the 2022 Woodbine Thoroughbred meeting is the $150,000 Whimsical Stakes (G3) for older fillies and mares sprinting 6 furlongs on the Tapeta main track. Conditions were excellent for early May in Southern Ontario, with sunny skies and a race time temperature of 16C (61F). Last year's winner Boardroom was sent off as the 11-10 favorite in the field of 7, unraced since winning the Seaway Stakes (G3) in August. In to challenge her included 7-2 second choice Dreaming of Drew, winner of the Long Branch Stakes on opening day April 16, and 5-1 third choice Artie's Princess, unraced since finishing fifth in last year's Whimsical.

Down the stretch in the Whimsical Stakes.

Jockey Reylu Gutierrez sent Artie's Princess to the lead out of the chute through an opening quarter of 22.89 before 11-2 fourth choice Our Secret Agent took over on the far turn through a half in 45.56. Into the lane Our Secret Agent continued to lead through 5f in 57.47 as jockey Luis Contreras sent Boardroom out 4 wide from 6th for her rally. However Our Secret Agent, confidently ridden by Kazushi Kimura, drew off to win by 2 3/4 lengths in 1:09.62. It was another 1/2 length back to Dreaming of Drew third.

Maybe, I'm more surprised today. She's best at the [longer] distance, the six furlong and a half. Today, maybe it's too short [of a distance] but, at the beginning she was quite smooth to get the good position and she was just keeping fit [at the end]."

Kimura added, "I was thinking that Luis' (Contreras) horse, Boardroom, and Artie's Princess, for sure were going to show some speed, and Gary's (Boulanger) horse too. But, at the break, I didn't push her much, just [enough] to see if I could get a position. I didn't feel any pressure from the outside, so it was so easy for her."
