Scott Spieth reaches 5000 wins

Jockey Scott Spieth had his 5000th win aboard Wheelingndealing at Presque Isle Downs on 5/27.
Date: 5/28/2024

Jockey Scott Spieth notched career win number 5,000 in the seventh race at Presque Isle Downs on Monday May 27 aboard 5-2 favorite Wheelingndealing for trainer Aldana Spieth (his wife) and owner Bruno Schickedanz in a $32,000 allowance event for older fillies and mares sprinting 6 furlongs on Tapeta, after notching his 4,999th win a week earlier, on Monday May 20. Spieth stalked pacesetter Cidstayinurlane (ridden by Martina Rojas) down the backstretch, swept to the lead into the stretch, and held off late-running 14-1 Googly Eyes (with jockey Rosario Montanez) to get the 1 length victory. This was just his sixth win of the year from 69 starts so far.

Spieth is the 39th North American jockey to win 5,000 races, and definitely took the slow route to get there. After winning a Quarter Horse race in 1985, he started his Thoroughbred riding career with a second place result at Mount Pleasant Meadows, Michigan in 1986. He had to wait until August 23, 1987 to get to the winner's circle riding Positivelyecstatic in an allowance at Mount Pleasant. Along with his 5,000 Thoroughbred wins, he is credited with 13 wins aboard other breeds.

In terms of wins his best year was 2005 when he won 307 races from 1,333 starts, along with 242 seconds and 205 thirds, with purse earnings of $3.553 million. However, his best year in earnings was 2006 when with his 278 wins in 1,276 starts he racked up $3.575 million in purse earnings.

His best horse to date was the Ohio-bred gelding Tri Uimet trained by Jeffrey Radosevich for owner Gerald Silver. Under Speith, he earned $309,705, including stakes wins in the Best of Ohio Sprint in 2009 and 2010 and the 2006 Cleveland Gold Cup, at Thistledown. Following close behind was the West Virginia bred mare My Sister Margaret for owner Sydney Racing and trainer Wayne Mogge. Under Spieth, she earned $291,532 including stakes wins in the 2009 West Virginia Breeders' Classic Stakes at Charles Town.

At time of writing (May 28, 2024) Spieth has a record of 5,000 wins, 4,614 seconds, and 4,388 thirds in 31,877 rides, with purse earnings of $67,140,090. In stakes company he has 83 wins, 80 seconds, and 70 thirds in just 539 starts, earning $5,921,931. He has only ridden in 41 graded stakes, with no wins, 3 seconds, and 2 thirds and earnings of $415,078.

Earlier in the year Spieth said, "I usually work six or seven horses a morning. Today I got on nine horses for (trainer and wife Aldana). I consider myself a very good horseman, not just a jockey, and I'm working to help build her business." Asked if he is considering retirement, he added, "I feel great and I'm glad to be back in action. I've always said either my mind or my body will tell me it's time to retire, and fortunately right now it's not an issue." Aldana owns horses under her Aldana Gonzalez Racing LLC banner.
