Royal Ascot 2019
The Prince of Wales's Stakes

Date: 05/07/2019

The Royal meeting is fast approaching and there are a number of exciting horses heading over from around the world. The Prince of Wales's Stakes (G1) is already billing up to be one of the races of the season, as last season's Arc runner up Sea of Class heads the betting. Here we cover the leading contenders for the race at this early stage.

Sea of Class

Sea of Class heads the betting at a general 3/1, and is a popular selection for punters using the latest promo from Paddy. Sired by the great Sea the Stars, she continued to improve last season into a leading three-year-old, following the debut defeat. She has won four of her six starts to date, culminating with a neck defeat to Enable in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1). This performance was a remarkable one considering the poor draw she had, and the fact she had to pass the entire field in the home straight. Therefore she was a pretty unlucky loser, and connections will be looking for victory in the race later this year. This form puts her as the favourite for this race, and she must have a very good chance.

Magical

Another classy filly in the shape of the Aiden O'Brien trained Magical. She is a general 5/1 for the Ascot contest, and appears to be better than ever following her eye catching comeback, in which she ran to an RPR of 121. She has then followed this up with another recent victory. She landed the Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes (G1) on Champions Day at the track last season, and has now won six of her 14 starts under rules. She finished a long way behind Sea of Class in the previously mentioned Arc, so would appear to have it all to do to turn the tables.

Masar

2018 Derby winner Masar will be returning following an injury, but big things will be expected of him this season. He can be supported at a best priced 8/1 for the Ascot contest, and the son of New Approach rates a solid contender. He is one of the leading horses for Godolphin, as the operation continues to go from strength to strength, mostly down to the Charlie Appleby stable. This would appear his most likely option, but he has no entries so it is up in the air when we will next see the horse on the track, and whether he will return with the same ability.
