Jockey Heriberto Figueroa aboard Bob and Jackie after winning the Let It Ride Stakes. |
The feature race on the first Saturday of the 2019 Bing Crosby fall meeting at Del Mar was the $75,000 Let It Ride Stakes, a 1 mile Jimmy Durante Turf test for 3-year-olds, restricted to non-winners of $60,000 stakes races at 1 mile or over, other than state-bred. Conditions were excellent at the historic seaside oval, with clear skies and a high of 80 degrees. Ocean Fury was sent off as the 8-5 favorite in the field of 5 off his disappointing 10th place finish in the Twilight Derby (G2) just a week ago. In to challenge him included 9-4 second choice Bob and Jackie, unraced since winning the Eddie Logan at Santa Anita last December, and 4-1 third choice Golden Birthday, 4th in an allowance last out.

Left: Bob and Jackie in the winner's circle. Winning trainer Richard Baltas said, "He was ready at Santa Anita, but this seemed like a better spot. I was able to get a couple more works into him. I didn’t think he got the bob."
Right: Bob and Jackie in the paddock before the race. Asked about the long layoff, Baltas added, "He had an injury to a hind pastern, his right hind, a hairline fracture. We put a screw in it. Took our time and he came back 100 percent." He said that the Hollywood Derby (G1) in 3 weeks is "too quick back".
Left: Second place finisher Proud Pedro in the paddock before the race. The 9-2 fourth choice was last early under Rafael Bejarano, rallied well but just missed. The Leonard Powell trainee improved his record to 1 win, 2 seconds, and 2 thirds in 6 starts, earning $79,519 for owners Benowitz Family Trust, Madaket Stables, and Mark Mathiesen.
Right: Third place finisher and beaten favorite Ocean Fury in the paddock. The 8-5 choice sat 4th early under Geovanni Franco then rallied to finish 3rd beaten just 3/4 length.
