Owner Brereton C. Jones leads Biofuel to the winner's circle after the 2010 La Lorgnette Stakes at Woodbine.
The feature race on Sunday at Woodbine was the $150,000 La Lorgnette Stakes for 3-year-old fillies. A field of 7 went 1 1/16 miles over the Polytrack on a sunny afternoon with temperatures in the high 70's. As expected, champion juvenile filly Biofuel was sent off as the 3-10 favorite off a 2 length win in the Star Shoot Stakes last out after finishing a close fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies in November. In to challenge her included 5-1 second choice Ernfold, exiting an allowance win over the Keeneland turf in April, and 8-1 third choice Empire Spring, who broke her maiden last out at Keeneland and was making her stakes debut.
Biofuel takes the lead in the stretch.
47-1 longest shot Witch's Coven battled for the lead with 11-1 Moment of Majesty first time past the stands and around the clubhouse turn through slow fractions of 25.34 and 50.21. Jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva kept favorite Biofuel in last early, about 4 lengths off the pace. Entering the far turn, Ernfold, who had stalked the pace in third, came through on the inside to take the lead, through 3/4 in 1:14.55, and opened up a 2 length advantage in mid-stretch. However, Biofuel came out six wide into the lane to pass tiring horses, easily swept past Ernfold inside the 1/8 pole, and finished up a length in front under a hand ride in 1:45.49. It was 2 lengths back to Moment of Majesty third.
