King's Plate Day is one of the biggest racedays of the year at Woodbine, with 5 stakes races on its undercard contested over both the Tapeta main track and the E.P. Taylor turf course. Conditions were typical for mid August in Southern Ontario, with sunny skies and a daytime high of 34.3 C (75.7 F), feeling like 29C (84F) due to the humidity, with the turf firm on both turf courses (E.P. Taylor course GoingStick 11.1, inner course 11.3).

Closing out the Saturday stakes action, the $200,000 bet365 King Edward Stakes (G2) featured a field of 6 older horses going 1 mile on the inner turf in the main local prep for the Woodbine Mile (G1) on September 12. Last year's winner Gas Me Up was sent off as the 2-1 favorite off a 4th place finish in the Frank Kilroe Mile (G2) over 9-4 second choice Irish Aces, second in the Connaught Cup (G2), and 3-1 third choice Seminole Chief, winner of the Jonathan Schuster Memorial.

Jockey John Velazquez sent 9-2 fourth choice Piper's Factor to the lead first time by through fractions of 23.00, 46.50, and 1:10.50 while pressed by 9-1 G T Five Hundred and stalked by Irish Aces and Gas Me Up. Turning for home Piper's Factor continued to lead through 7f in 1:22.86, but Gas Me Up, confidently ridden by Fraser Aebly, came out for room to catch Piper's Factor by a nose in 1:35.44. It was another nose back to Irish Aces to complete the tight three-horse win photo.

Left: Gas Me Up in the winner's circle. Winning trainer Kevin Attard said, "This is a real cool horse. Wasn't sure (of the win) at first, but he picked the right time to be in front that's for sure. He had a great winter in California this year. I'm happy to get him back. He had a little bit of refreshening after that. The owners have really done well by him and he's obviously rewarded them really well. I'm always a little bit more worried on this (inner) course for him. On the outer (Taylor) course he absolutely loves it, so, looking forward to getting him back there next month."

Left: Gas Me Up in the post parade. Winning jockey Fraser Aebly said, "I've had the chance to ride him previously for Kev, and I love the way he runs. He's a big, strong horse. He gives you everything he's got every time and he showed up today."

Left: Souped Up in the winner's circle. Winning jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson said, "There are only two words for it: dug in. This horse comes every single time to play. I rode him quite a few years back, and I've always been a fan of his."

Right: Souped Up gets hosed off after the race. Wilson added, "The trip was beauty. I was sitting just off [Western Whirl], and when I asked [Souped Up] to dig, he dug, and every time I asked him for more, he gave me more. I was quite confident that I won it, but I waited… until I was unofficially informed, and I gave myself a bit of a shout out loud. I was pretty happy with that."

Left: Proctor Street in the winner's circle. Erin Campbell, assistant to winning trainer Brendan Walsh said, "She loves her racing. The one thing you can always guarantee with this filly is she will try her heart out. And if you could guarantee that with them all, it would be easy."

Right: Proctor Street heads back to the barn. Winning jockey Pietro Moran said, "It was a perfect trip. Everything fell into place. We got covered up, saved ground, followed the right horse, and she did the rest. She's classy as can be."

Left: Second place finisher Eponine returns after the race. The Kevin Attard trainee improved her record to 3 wins, 4 seconds, and 1 third in 10 starts, earning $238,534 for owner Repole Stable.

We just hopefully buy enough, and something's going to work, but she was beautiful. She was really fast looking. But, the credit goes to Kevin (Attard). My job's easy. I buy them and then I give them to Kevin, and then Kevin's got to do all the work. We just sit back and watch."

Kicking off the Plate day stakes sextet was the $150,000 bet365 Soaring Free Stakes featuring a field of 6 two-year-olds sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs on the Taylor turf in the main local prep for the Summer Stakes (G1) on September 12. De La Renta was sent off as the 9-5 favorite off her July 19 debut victory, over 2-1 second choice Through the Years, a disappointing 16th in the Norfolk (G2) at Royal Ascot after breaking maiden at second asking at Aqueduct, and 4-1 third choice Quipster off his debut win on June 28.

Jockey Sahin Civaci sent 13-1 longest shot Humble and Kind to the lead down the backstretch through fractions of 21.92 and 45.12 while pressed by Through the Years and stalked by Quipster. Turning for home, the pacesetters tired as 10-1 first time starter Speaker's Speech came out 6 wide to sweep to the lead through 3/4 in 1:10.18, but favorite De La Renta, 5th early under Fraser Aebly, rallied to get up by a head in 1:17.19. It was a long 5 1/4 lengths back to Quipster third.

Left: De La Renta in the winner's circle. Winning jockey Fraser Aebly said, "She showed a lot of signs of being a good horse. She fell off the bridle for me and relaxed early. Around the three and a half furlong pole, she started to pick it up when everybody started to make their move. Around the 3 1/2 furlong pole, she started to pick it up when everybody kind of started to make their move and I could kind of ease her into making her move. She got a little green about the 1/8 pole, she started looking at the crowd with me but she still got up in time and that's all that matters."

Right: De La Renta gets hosed off on her way back to the barn. Winning trainer Kevin Attard said, "Long term goal is the Natalma so we were pretty confident. It's a lot to ask, they've never been that close to the crowd. It's new territory for them all. She's just a little greenish, she'll get over that, she'll mature over time. She carried herself really well in the paddock, I was really happy with her. She got a little nervous the first time. Today she was a lot more composed."
