King's Plate Day is one of the biggest racedays of the year at Woodbine, however torrential rains on its originally scheduled date of Saturday August 17 forced the cancellation of the card after 5 races, with the 5 stakes races including the Plate moved 6 days later. Ticketholders were refunded and admission was free for the rescheduled date. On Friday conditions were ideal for racing with partly cloudy skies and a high temperature of 26 C (79 F), however despite sunny weather all week the Taylor turf course had not fully dried after being waterlogged, and was rated "good".

The $200,000 bet365 King Edward Stakes (G2) featured a field of 7 older horses going 1 mile on the Taylor turf in the main local prep for the Rogers Woodbine Mile (G1) on September 14. Highlander Stakes (G2) winner Filo Di Arianna was sent off as the 3-5 favorite. In to challenge him included 3-1 second choice Cruden Bay, winner of the Connaught Cup (G2), and 9-2 third choice War Bomber, second in the Connaught Cup.

Jockey Sahin Civaci sent Filo Di Arianna to a clear lead after an awkward break setting fractions of 23.75. 46.09, and 1:09.27 while pressed by 54-1 Kaukokaipuu and stalked by War Bomber and 45-1 Secret Reserve. In midstretch War Bomber gained a short lead through 7f in 1:21.17 but Filo Di Arianna fought back late to win by a nose in 1:34.07. It was another 2 3/4 lengths back to Secret Reserve third.

I kind of feel if they were going to beat him, it was going to be today. I thought maybe he was about 85, 90 per cent. He's 8-years-old – as we get older, it's not as simple. We'll see – that's our target."
