Pool One of the 2012 Kentucky Derby Future Wager is now closed. As expected the field wound up the favorite at only 3-2. Union Rags, second in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile, closed as the second choice at 7-1, but he is not expected to make his first start this year until February 26 in the Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park. Holy Bull Stakes winner Algorithms was the third choice at 12-1. The total amount wagered during Pool One was $631,304 which is a new single pool record, beating out the $620,362 wagered in Pool 1 of 2005. Of that, $494,263 was bet to win while $137,041 went into the exacta pool.
The Future Wager is a two-dollar minimum bet to win only with no refunds if your horse doesn't start in the race with both win and exacta wagering available. Pool 2 is scheduled for arch 2-4 and will also include the single Kentucky Oaks Future Wager pool. The third and final pool is set for March 30-April 1. The 137th running of the Kentucky Derby is scheduled for Saturday, May 5. Full rules and info for the wager is available here.
