Justify gallops at Churchill Downs on Saturday. |
Justify was at Churchill Downs since the Monday after the Belmont Stakes and shipped back to California on Sunday June 17. Here he is galloping on Saturday morning then loading up to leave on Sunday.
Justify heads out for his morning gallop. Trainer Bob Baffert said, “I just wanted to come here for a few days and really soak it in. And to see the horse again. And to see the horse again, it’s like, ‘Wow. Dude.’ They can’t talk, so I’m his voice. I just hope I represent him well.”

Right: Justify gets his bath. Jockey Mike Smith said, “They love him, especially here. For me, it’s just such an honor to get to ride a horse like this and win these races. I feel like I could just jump right now and keep floating in the air.”

Left: Baffert has some new signs at his barn now, with room left for more! Smith added, "If he never won a race before this horse and never won a race after this, it would be enough to put him in the Hall of Fame."

Left: Bob Baffert walks the shedrow with Justify. Baffert said, "I have to (maintain training) because he's pretty wild. I have to do something with him. For those three weeks (between the grade 1 Preakness Stakes and the Belmont), I saw a big difference in him. The two-week turnaround (between the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness) I couldn't train him because of the weather and the bruised heel. But now he looks great. We're not going to do anything major with him, but you have to keep him going. You can't take a high-level athlete like that and throw him on the couch for a couple weeks. He likes to get out there and do something."

Justify loads up on the van to the airport to return to California. Upon his arrival at his barn at Santa Anita, Baffert said, "Look at him. He looks like he's ready to go." Commenting on the cooler weather in Arcadia vs the near-tropical conditions at Churchill Downs, he added, "Hey, does that cool air feel better?" Assistant Jimmy Barnes replied "Oh my God, sure does!"
