![]() Owner Robert Evans leads Tonalist down Victory Lane after the 2015 Jockey Club Gold Cup with owner Robert Evans |
The highlight of the Belmont Park Fall Championship Meeting is the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1), a "Win and You're In" qualifier for the Breeders' Cup Classic, contested at the Classic distance of 1 1/4 miles on the main track. A field of 6 older horses went to post, under dark cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid 50's, after heavy rains overnight downgraded the main track to sloppy. Last year's winner Tonalist was sent off as the even-money favorite after finishing second in both the Metropolitan (G1) and Suburban (G2) then third in the Whitney (G1). In to challenge him included 7-2 second choice Coach Inge, second in the Woodward (G1), and two horses at 5-1, Suburban (G2) winner Effinex and Donn (G1) winner Constitution.

I thought that even when he got beat this year, he never ran a bad race. He's a top class horse. We're back on top. I'm delighted for Mr. Evans. Obviously, he believed in us all along. And mostly I'm delighted for the horse, I've never lost my faith in the horse. I never thought he was disappointing, he was a bit unlucky for the year, but the way he won today was very impressive."

Left: Tonalist returns after the race. Winning jockey John Velazquez said, "I think (in the Suburban) I let him do what he wanted to do instead of taking hold of him. and he got caught. Today, he was in the bridle and I kept him behind horses. (Turning for home) I was going inside or outside, but once (Wicked Strong) started drifting out, I had to go inside. He was so much better today. Everything worked out perfect. He was so good and traveling so well throughout the race."

Right: Third place finisher Effinex returns after the race. Trainer Jimmy Jerkens said, "Effinex was sitting perfect then it looked like he was losing his action in behind."
