Owner Robert Evans leads Tonalist down Victory Lane after the 2015 Jockey Club Gold Cup with owner Robert Evans
Date: 10/03/2015

The highlight of the Belmont Park Fall Championship Meeting is the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1), a "Win and You're In" qualifier for the Breeders' Cup Classic, contested at the Classic distance of 1 1/4 miles on the main track. A field of 6 older horses went to post, under dark cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid 50's, after heavy rains overnight downgraded the main track to sloppy. Last year's winner Tonalist was sent off as the even-money favorite after finishing second in both the Metropolitan (G1) and Suburban (G2) then third in the Whitney (G1). In to challenge him included 7-2 second choice Coach Inge, second in the Woodward (G1), and two horses at 5-1, Suburban (G2) winner Effinex and Donn (G1) winner Constitution.

Jockey Javier Castellano sent 5-1 Constitition to the lead on the clubhouse turn and he set fractions of 24.35, 48.17, and 1:12.48 while pressed by 7-1 Wicked Strong and stalked by 5-1 Effinex. At the top of the stretch, Wicked Strong moved up to gain a short lead through 1 mile in 1:36.90. Favorite Tonalist, 4th early on under John Velazquez, angled down towards the rail for room and powered past Wicked Strong at the 3/16 pole, drewing off to win going away by 4 1/4 lengths in 2:02.16 over the sloppy main track. It was a long 6 3/4 lengths back to Effinex third.

Check out the other races on the card: The Champage, Frizette, and Hill Prince and The Flower Bowl and Kelso Handicap.

Winning trainer Christophe Clement said, "We're back here, we won this race a year ago and it's great. I thought that even when he got beat this year, he never ran a bad race. He's a top class horse. We're back on top. I'm delighted for Mr. Evans. Obviously, he believed in us all along. And mostly I'm delighted for the horse, I've never lost my faith in the horse. I never thought he was disappointing, he was a bit unlucky for the year, but the way he won today was very impressive."

Winning jockey John Velazquez said, "I think (in the Suburban) I let him do what he wanted to do instead of taking hold of him. and he got caught. Today, he was in the bridle and I kept him behind horses. (Turning for home) I was going inside or outside, but once (Wicked Strong) started drifting out, I had to go inside. He was so much better today. Everything worked out perfect. He was so good and traveling so well throughout the race."
