There were five graded stakes at Woodbine on Saturday, billed as the Canada Day Racing Festival, headlined by the $200,000 bet365 Highlander Stakes (G2) for older horses sprinting 5 furlongs on the inner turf course. Conditions were typical for late June in Southern Ontario, with sunny skies and a daytime high of 25.8 C (78.4 F), and the inner turf going "firm" (GoingStick reading 11.3). The outer E.P. Taylor turf course remains closed to racing after the backstretch section was rebuilt, and is expected to reopen in the fall.

Jockey Pietro Moran sent Miss Vyvyanne to the lead through an opening quarter of 22.22 while pressed by 14-1 G T Five Hundred and stalked by 11-2 fourth choice Western Whirl. Turning for home, Miss Vyvyanne opened up a 2 1/2 length lead through a half in 44.50, and easily held off Western Whirl the rest of the way to win by 2 lengths in 56.27. It was another 3/4 length back to G T Five Hundred and late-running Outlaw Kid in a dead-heat for third.

Jockey Rafael Hernandez sent Casson to the lead first time by through fractions of 23.45, 47.01, and 1:12.25 while pressed by 13-1 Fire and Wine and stalked by Magical Factor. Turning for home Casson tired as Magical Factor inherited the lead through 1 mile in 1:37.91, but 18-1 longest shot Brachetto, last early under Ryan Munger, rallied to win by 1/2 a length in 1:44.94. It was a long 3 1/4 lengths back to favorite Casson third.

I really thought he would enjoy the two turns and I'm very glad he showed that today at the races, definitely his stiffest test, but he's passed it with flying colours, and I'm very chuffed with him today. My wife and I raised all of our horses at our farm up until recently. We foaled him out and raised him there right until he was almost a 2-year-old. He's 100 percent Manitoba-bred."

Jockey Alex Achard sent 6-1 fourth choice Tulip to the lead first time by through fractions of 23.30, 47.84, and 1:12.83 while pressed by 8-1 Classic Move and stalked by Luster. Turning for home Tulip tired as Luster took over the lead through 1 mile in 1:37.56. Kept to task by Fraser Aebly, Luster drew off to win by 1 3/4 lengths over late-running 34-1 longest shot Katie's Grace in 1:44.06. It was a nose back to Dixie Law third.

Jockey Fraser Aebly sent Paramount Prince to the lead first time by through fractions of 24.96, 50.60, and 1:14.47 while pressed by 13-2 Saugeen and stalked by Runaway Again. Turning for home Paramount Prince continued to lead through 1 mile in 1:38.44 but Runaway Again, confidently ridden by Ryan Munger, came out for room and rallied to get up by a neck in 1:50.63. It was another 2 1/2 lengths back to 8-1 Swift Delivery third, while favorite Notorious Gangster failed to rally and finished 5th beaten 6 1/2 lengths.

[Paramount Prince] loves the front, so I thought I'm just going to follow him around, save ground and if I can get past him, I'll probably just about be the winner. Jockey Sahin Civaci sent 13-2 Without Cause to the lead first time by through fractions of 22.84 and 46.67 while pressed by Shifty and stalked by 7-1 Pondering. Into the lane Without Cause tired as Shifty came out for room and swept to the lead through 3/4 in 1:10.76. Kept to task by Rafael Hernandez, Shifty held off late-running 10-1 Fantastical to win by 3/4 length in 1:29.08. It was a long 4 1/2 lengths back to 35-1 Bessie Abbot third, while favorite Ozara was bumped at the start and failed to rally finishing 6th beaten 6 1/2 lengths.
