Date: 1/26/2023

Jockey Florent Geroux, a native of Argentan, France, notched career win number 2000 in the fifth race at Fair Ground Race Course on Thursday, January 26 aboard 1-5 favorite Warrant for trainer Brad Cox in a $55,000 allowance optional claiming race for older horses. The 36-year-old grew up as the son of a jockey and later trainer Dominique Geroux, a graduate of the French riding academy, and won his first race in 2004 at Longchamp before moving his tack to America, first in 2007 but falling and suffering a broken wrist on opening day at Keeneland. He returned in 2008 for good, starting off in Chicago, earning his first riding title at the 2011 Hawthorne meeting.

After the 2000th win (after getting win 1999 on the 22nd) he said, "I would like to thank my family and close friends for their support. It is important to have people behind you especially with all the ups and downs in this business, and they have always been cheering for me. Also, all the trainers and owners who gave me the opportunity to reach this number. Brad (trainer Brad Cox) definitely helped. He has been my go-to guy the past few years. Thanks to my agent John Panagot right now, and of course (former agent) Doug Bredar who put me on almost all of those winners. Thanks to them. I love you guys." 540 of his 2000 wins came at Fair Grounds, where he holds two riding titles (2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons).

He has seven Breeders' Cup World Championship wins, including two in the Distaff aboard Monomoy Girl, in 2020 and 2020, and won the 2017 Classic aboard Gun Runner. He won the 2021 Kentucky Derby months after the fact, after first place finisher Medina Spirit was disqualified due to a drug positive, moving Geroux's mount Mandaloun from second up to the win spot for trainer Brad Cox.

At time of writing (January 26, 2023) Geroux has a record of 2000 wins, 1754 seconds, and 1586 thirds in 11,855 starts, with purse earnings of just over $144 million. Gun Runner is far and away his best horse, winner of $15.9 million including the 2017 Breeders' Cup Classic (leading to Horse of the Year honors) and the 2018 Pegasus World Cup. Monomoy Girl ranks second with her $4.758 million, followed by $2.440 million winner Shedaresthedevil, winner of the 2020 Kentucky Oaks.
