The Jockey Club’s Annual Top 2-Year-Old Rankings for 2017

Bolt d'Oro is one of the high weights on the 2017 Jockey Club’s Annual Top 2-Year-Old Rankings (formerly the Experimental Free Handicap)

Date: 2/1/2018

Good Magic, winner of the 2017 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, and Bolt d'Oro, winner of the Del Mar Futurity, both received the high weight assignment of 126 pounds on The Jockey Club’s Annual Top 2-Year-Old Rankings, formerly known as the Experimental Free Handicap, for 2017. The 126 pounds assigned is the same as last year's high weight Classic Empire and is the standard high weight for the list. Mendelssohn, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, received the third highest weight of all eligible 2-year-old males at 123 pounds.

Good Magic is the other high weight at 126lbs
The filly division is headed by high weight Caledonia Road, winner of the 2017 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. She rated at 123 pounds which is the standard 123 for fillies.

The Jockey Club’s Annual Top 2-Year-Old Rankings (previously called the Experimental Free Handicap), published annually by The Jockey Club since 1935, is a weight-based assessment of the previous year’s leading 2-year-olds, with the weights compiled for a hypothetical race at 1 1/16 miles on dirt. The racing secretaries on the weighting committee were P.J. Campo of the Stronach Group, Ben Huffman of Churchill Downs and Keeneland, Steve Lym of Woodbine Entertainment, Martin Panza of The New York Racing Association Inc., and Thomas S. Robbins of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.

Out of the eligible 245 males and 215 fillies, a total of 136 males and 119 fillies were assigned weights. The full lists for both colts and fillies are accessible here on the Jockey Club website along with past performances for all of them.

The other use of the rankings is in determining which horses are "dual qualifiers" for the Kentucky Derby. Horses ranked within 10 pounds of the male topweight or who are a champion in another country and have a Dosage Index of 4.0 or less and a Center of Distribution of 1.25 or less are considered the dual qualifiers. These horses have statistically shown that they have a better chance at winning the Derby.

Listed below are all the colts and fillies with an Experimental weight of 116 lbs or higher. Dual qualifiers are highlighted below in bold with an asterisk and each horse's dosage index is shown in parentheses by his or her name. This year all but one of the colts is a dual qualifier.
