2012 Evangeline Mile Handicap

Tracy Hebert celebrates after winning the Evangeline Mile Handicap aboard Heavy On Themister

The feature race on Saturday night at Evangeline Downs was the $125,000 Evangeline Mile Handicap. A field of 10 older horses contested this 1 mile trip around two turns of the Opelousas, Louisiana oval. Al Stall Jr. trainee Apart was sent off as the 4-5 favorite off a sixth place finish in the Lone Star Handicap (G3) at Lone Star Park. In to challenge him included 7-1 second choice Heavy On Themister off his second place finish in the Louisiana Legends Classic, and 15-2 third choice Pirate Island, second in the Louisiana Legends Sprint last out.

Heavy On Themister (inside) battles with Apart in the stretch

Jockey Tracy Hebert sent Heave On Themister to the lead first time by and he set quick fractions of 23.08, 45.96, and 1:10.46 while pressed by Pirate Island to his outside. Apart was last early under jockey Gerard Melancon, unleashed his rally on the turn but Heavy On Themister was up to the task, holding off the heavy favorite by a neck in 1:36.38 over the fast main track. It was a long 5 1/2 lengths back to 10-1 Sweetsouthernmoon third.

But I’ve ridden this guy several times recently and knew that he is a free-wheeling horse who you can’t really rate too much. I just waited as long as I could to knuckle down on him, and when I did he really gave me his all."

Right: Heavy On Themister in the post parade. The Shawn David trainee improved his record to 4 wins, 2 seconds, and 0 thirds in 12 starts, earning $182,050 for owner-breeder T.J. Dickey and Rebecca Farm.

The 4-5 favorite trailed early 7 lengths off the pace under jockey Gerard Melancon, then closed late but just missed. The Al Stall Jr. trainee improved his record to 5 wins, 4 seconds, and 2 thirds in 17 starts, earning $734,610 for owner-breeder Adele Dilschneider.

Right: Third place finisher Sweetsouthernmoon heads into the starting gate. The 10-1 fifth choice raced in 7th early under jockey Diego Saenz, responded when asked but finished third beaten 5 3/4 lengths. The Ron Faucheux trainee improved his record to 9 wins, 7 seconds, and 10 thirds in 36 starts, earning $285,960 for owner Robert Asaro.
