Trainer Josie Carroll after winning the 2024 Woodbine Oaks with Kin's Concerto

Josie Carroll reaches 1,000 wins

Date: 8/12/2024

Trainer Josie Carroll notched win number 1,000 with Spinzar in the fourth race at Woodbine on Sunday, August 11, a $110,700 allowance optional claimer for older horses going 1 1/4 miles on the E.P. Taylor turf course rated "good". Jockey Luis Contreras sent the 5-1 fourth choice to a clear lead on the clubhouse dogleg to win gate-to-wire, holding off late-running 7-1 McAvoy by 3/4 length in 2:05.20. The 4-year-old son of Tapit is owned by LNJ Foxwoods. This was 22 days after she got her 999th win, which was with Kin's Concerto in the Woodbine Oaks back on July 20.

The native of Toronto took equine studies at Humber College before starting her racing career under Canadian Hall of Fame trainer Mac Benson at Windfields Farm, and took out her own trainer's licence in 1994. Her first win as the trainer of record was Lilac Charm at Woodbine on September 21, 1994. Notable horses she has trained include two-time Horse of the Year Mighty Heart, Careless Jewel, Avie’s Flatter, Ami’s Holiday, Amis Gizmo, Leigh Court, Lukes Alley, Inglorious, Serenading and Springside. In 2006 she became the first female trainer to win the Queen's Plate (now run as the King's Plate) with Edenwold, following that up with Inglorious in 2011 and Mighty Heart winning the Plate and Prince of Wales in 2020. Although Mighty Heart failed to sweep the Canadian Triple Crown,

fellow Carroll trainee Belichick took the Breeders' Stakes.

In 2017 she sent Ami's Mesa to the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. Sent off at 18-1, she led in deep stretch only to be caught at the line by 66-1 longshot Bar of Gold. In 2019, she was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, following in the footsteps of former boss Mac Benson.

At time of writing (August 12, 2024) Carroll has a record of 1,000 wins, 816 seconds, and 745 thirds in 5,962 starts, with purse earnings of over $58 million. In stakes competition she has 176 wins (59 graded), 147 seconds, and 132 thirds in 1,010 starts, earning almost $25.5 million. Her top money earner is the mare Inglorious, who did not win any graded stakes but padded her bankroll to over $1.42 million winning the Woodbine Oaks and Queen's Plate in 2011 among multiple in-the-money placings in graded company. Second in earnings was Mighty Heart, winner of $1.14 million. Along with his Plate and Prince of Wales wins he also took the Dominion Day (G3) and Autumn (G2) Stakes. A close third is Careless Jewel, winner of $1.01 million including the Delaware Oaks (G2), Alabama (G1), and Cotillion (G1) before finishing her 7-race career with an 8th place finish in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) at Santa Anita.
