Ron the Greek blows out steam as he is sillouetted against the pre-dawn sky.

World Championships
Breeders' Cup Workouts

Date: 10/29/2013

Training hours on Tuesday were were very busy with a large number of Breeders' Cup horses out now that the rain is over. The skies were partly cloudy and it was quite chilly early on with temperatures in the 40's, although it did warm up a bit to around 60 by the end of training hours. The main track was fast and the turf firm even though only one horse went out on it. Several of the European entrants cleared quarantine this morning and were out on the track.

Here are photos for 74 of the horses on the track Tuesday morning. Click the small picture to see a larger version. We arrived in the pre-dawn darkness, so some of the photos taken before sunrise are a bit dark, but that is beyond my control.

Will Take Charge, winner of the Travers Stakes, jogged and galloped on the main track in preparation for the Classic. The 3-year-old son of Unbridled's Song drew post position 10 for the race, which wasn't terribly pleasing to trainer D. Wayne Lukas, and was posted at odds of 12-1 on the morning line. Will Take Charge will be ridden by jockey Luis Saez.

Flat Out jogged once around the main track. Trainer Bill Mott said, "I think he's sitting on a big race. He didn't run his very best race in the Gold Cup, which means maybe he'll come back. Horses don't always seem to run their A-plus race back-to-back-to-back. If Cigar didn't run his A-race he was still able to win, just running maybe his B race."

Mucho Macho Man galloped 1 1/2 miles and schooled in the starting gate under the supervision of trainer Kathy Ritvo. Co-owner Dean Reeves said of the Classic contender, "One thing that has helped is that he's won a Grade 1 race, so no matter what happens in this race, he's still a champion. We were somewhat relieved that you can check that box and he gets up there where people can say he's a Grade I winner. You can't take that away from him. Seeing him come back and win the Awesome Again showed us he was back and can move forward to the Breeders' Cup."

Ron the Greek, winner of the Jockey Club Gold Cup, jogged once around the Santa Anita main track. Trainer Bill Mott said, "I don't think there was a horse in the country that was going to beat him in the Jockey Club Gold Cup the last time he ran. He ran as good as any horse could run and it was the fastest Gold Cup in 11 years. He just left them all for dead when they turned for home. I can't tell you if he's going to repeat that race. He always shows up and he always gives us a good race. Out of the last 21 races he has been 1-2-3-4 in 20 of them. He always shows up, he gives you a good effort and he's a horse that if he feels like it leaving the gate he could run a big one."

Street Girl galloped 1 1/2 miles under exercise rider Edmundo Cedeno. Owner Ronald Sanchez said of his Distaff longshot, "I had seen her train. She had good strength and everything I like in a filly. She had a great attitude, very calm, very smart. She is a very special filly. Horses can't read the tote board. Besides, I trust this guy (Azpurua). We have a chance everywhere we go."
horse racing breeders cup
Close Hatches jogged once around in preparation for the Distaff. Trainer Bill Mott said, "It's not surprising that our filly has come on and done what she's done. She's won a couple of Grade I's on her own and she's run very well. I'm very happy with her, a filly who never got her first race until January. We were planning to run her in November of her 2-year-old year and we missed out on that. She got a little fever." Joel Rosario will be in the irons.

Royal Delta, winner of the last 2 Distaffs, jogged once around the main track. Trainer Bill Mott said of the favorite going for the three-peat, "Her works leading into the Beldame were a little slower. Instead of 46 it was 48. She was still breezing and going well. She jogged a couple of weeks after the Personal Ensign and we tried to get a little weight back on her, looking forward to this race hoping that we had enough gas left in the tank for this one." Mike Smith gets the call on Friday.

Indy Point galloped 1 1/2 miles under exercise rider David Nuesch in preparation for the Turf. Trainer Richard Mandella said, "After the (Arlington Million) he was really sore; I was even afraid he might have broken a cannon bone the way he was acting. But you could see where he'd banged himself; he was all nicked up. Then a couple of hours later he was doing better. And by the next morning, after we'd poulticed him, he was doing fine. So I'm forgetting that race and expecting that he's going to do a lot better here."

Point of Entry galloped "an easy mile" Tuesday morning at Santa Anita after arriving from Belmont Park on Monday. "He's happy," said Gene Recio, assistant to trainer Shug McGaughey, who was scheduled to arrive in Southern California Tuesday afternoon. "It was an easy ship." Last year's Turf runner-up is scheduled to make his first start since June 8 on Saturday. "It's a lot to ask of him, but he's a great horse. He's capable of doing it," Recio said. "We wouldn't be here if we didn't think he could do it."

Little Mike, defending Breeders' Cup Turf champion, galloped on the main track Tuesday, "He's doing really well," said Tammy Fox, trainer Dale Romans' longtime significant other and main assistant, who was handling the training duties Tuesday morning because Romans was a little under the weather. "I haven't been getting on him, but his regular exercise rider says he can't be doing any better."

Real Solution galloped on the main track in preparation for the Turf.

The Fugue trotted 1 mile under exercise rider Gary Forster. Les Reynolds, traveling head lad for trainer John Gosden, reported that the Turf contender was in good shape. "She traveled over really well and was really perky last night, and she is in good form and Gary is pleased with her. We followed the same routine just to get some exercise into her and did not want to do too much with her first time of asking."

Vagabond Shoes jogged on the main track in preparation for the Turf.

Alterite jogged Tuesday morning in preparation for the Filly and Mare Turf. Trainer Chad Brown said, "I planned on just running her in the Garden City and the Queen Elizabeth and then shutting her down. She came out of the Queen Elizabeth so well - energy level, soundness and looks -  and that combined with the more I looked at her 2014 campaign, there wasn't any major objectives in the first half of the year that I had to have her for. So we made the decision, Mr. Schwartz and I, to go for this Breeders' Cup race and maybe give her a little longer vacation this winter than we had planned on."

Dank, trainer Michael Stoute's representative in the Filly and Mare Turf, got her first experience of the Santa Anita turf track Tuesday. She trotted half a circuit of the course before breaking into a canter down the home stretch. She also went back to the barn via the paddock to get used to the surroundings.

Olympic Glory had his first experience on the dirt when jogging two circuits of the track for trainer Richard Hannon. The son of Choisir comes to Santa Anita off a win in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (British Champions Mile at Ascot) on Oct. 19 and will be ridden by champion jockey Richard Hughes in Saturday's Mile.

Silentio went out for a gallop. Trainer Gary Mandella said of his Mile entrant, "This race is always one of the toughest ones on the card. But this may be a good year for a horse like mine. Wise Dan comes into the race off a loss. Obviously comes into the race off a loss. A couple of the big Europeans that I thought we'd have to take on didn't come. The one tough Euro who came (Olympic Glory) raced only three weeks ago. So it seems to me that this might be a good time to take a shot. He's training really well; he's feeling good and I think he'll fire his good one Saturday."

Silver Max completed his major work at Santa Anita last Saturday by breezing 4f in 47 2/5, and was out for a jog today. "He's doing great," said Tammy Fox, trainer Dale Roman's longtime significant other and main assistant who was handling the training duties Tuesday morning because Romans was a little under the weather. "We've been here two weeks and all of our horses have had two good works here. It worked well with Little Mike last year, so we're hoping for the same luck again. Everyone is really doing well."

Fast Bullet galloped 1 1/2 miles Tuesday morning and schooled for a time in the gate. The son of 2004 Sprint champion Speightstown drew post position eight in the 12-horse field and is posted at odds of 6-1 on the morning line. Jockey Joel Rosario has the mount for trainer D. Wayne Lukas.

Dance Card galloped on the main track and goes in the Filly and Mare Sprint. "She doesn't always break well," trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said.  "Last time she didn't come out of the gate so sharp.  She was a little rusty but she's trained well since that race and reports are she's doing very well at Santa Anita.  I really would like to see her stalking, because if you kick her out of the gate she goes too fast."
horse racing breeders cup
Groupie Doll, defending champion in the Filly and Mare Sprint, visited the paddock, jogged 6f and then galloped 1 1/4 mile under exercise rider Jada Schlenk Tuesday morning at Santa Anita. Trainer Buff Bradley said, "I'm not totally surprised she's the morning line favorite. She's still the champ and she has not run poorly this year. She has been right there every time. In her race at Ellis (Gardenia) she was right there and in the TCA (Thoroughbred Club of America at Keeneland), she was not drilled and never stopped trying."

Summer Applause jogged Tuesday morning. The multiple stakes winner has been effective in two-turn races during her 14-race career, but Brown is trying her at seven furlongs. It will be her first venture at the distance since she broke her maiden on the synthetic surface at Woodbine in December 2011. "We're taking a shot there," Brown said. "Cutting her back to one turn is definitely an experiment. It's her last race before she's scheduled to be sold in the Fasig-Tipton sale next week. We thought it was chance worth taking. She's training sharp. She's going to need a lot of pace to run at and come late on the cutback. We're going to take a shot and see how it works out."

Handsome Mike galloped on the main track under exercise rider Paulie Roberts. He will have blinkers taken off in the Turf Sprint.

Spring to the Sky galloped on the main track in preparation for the Turf Sprint.

Capo Bastone will race on turf for the first time in the Turf Sprint. Trainer Todd Pletcher said, "The distance was the biggest factor. If the Sprint had been seven furlongs, we might have opted for that. We just felt that six furlongs at Santa Anita for a horse that comes from far of the pace, it was going to be hard to do. We've worked him on the turf a couple times this summer and he seemed to handle it well. He's got some synthetic history, and he handled that well. It's more about the dynamic of the race. I think it's going to set up the way he wants it. Hopefully, they're going to fly early and set it up for somebody to come from off the pace."
horse racing breeders cup
Alpha jogged over the Santa Anita main track Tuesday.  An upset winner of the Woodward at Saratoga in late August, Alpha will break from post seven in the Dirt Mile with jockey Joe Bravo. "Alpha should be fine from there," trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said.  "We're looking forward to trying him out a mile out there around two turns. He's the kind of colt that will do anything you ask of him."

Holy Lute galloped on the main track in preparation for the Dirt Mile. Trainer James Cassidy said, "I ran him in the Indiana race because it was 1 1/16 and not 1 1/8 like the (Awesome Again). I think down deep this horse is a miler and I didn't want to stretch him too much. I believe he'll enjoy dropping back to a mile Friday and I'm looking forward to it. I've also made a rider switch to Mike Smith and he's always a help. I think he'll give a good account of himself."
horse racing breeders cup
Verrazano, morning line favorite in the Mile, jogged on the main track. Trainer Todd Pletcher said, "He's always been a magnificent horse to look at. He looks unbelievable. He's training really well. I think he'll run well fresh. I think the mile distance will suit him well. He can maneuver a good trip from an outside post in the short run to the first turn."

With these 2-year-olds, part of it is a matter of the fact that we're 100 yards from the paddock with them. We don't have to go put them on an airplane and go through all that. It makes a difference."

Trainer Mark Casse said, "Had she not (won the Alcibiades), we probably would be passing (the Juvenile Fillies Turf) for sure. She's shown she can handle adversity, although this is a much tougher field. In any race, you have to have things go your way, and hopefully things go our way. If they go our way, she should have a good chance of winning and if she does, she does, and if she doesn't she doesn't. That's why they call it horse racing."
