A loose horse runs back to the barns on a foggy Wednesday morning at Santa Anita Park

World Championships
Breeders' Cup Workouts

Date: 10/31/2012

Wednesday morning at Santa Anita Park was cold and foggy as the horses continued their preparations for the Breeders' Cup World Championships. The fog was thick at first then thinned out a bit, but got even thicker than before just after 8am. The sun finally came out after the second rennovation breat at 9am, but the early part of the day has some times of very poor visibility. The final shipment of Breeders' Cup horses from the east coast, including Wise Dan and Shanghai Bobby, finally arrived in California around noon today, so we should see them out tomorrow morning along with the last European horses who will finally clear quarantine tomorrow morning.

Here are photos for 34 of the horses from this moring on the track or in the barns. Click the small picture to see a larger version. Most of the horses for today are different from yesterday, with only a few repeats. Sorry for the fog, but I can't control the weather!

Almost an Angel galloped 1 3/8 miles under exercise rider Lindsey Molina in preparation for Friday's Juvenile Fillies. She will represent trainer Wesley Ward's first starter in the Juvenile Fillies. Ward has saddled 12 previous Breeders' Cup starters with his initial entrant, Unfinished Symph, finishing third in the 1994 Mile at Churchill Downs. Molina said that Ward is in Florida this week and would not be here for the Championships.

Awesome Feather went out for a 1 1/2 mile gallop at 9:45 Wednesday morning. "She trained beautifully," trainer Chad Brown said of the Ladies Classic contender. "I'm very happy with the way she looked. She deserves all the credit. She has her own way about her. She takes good care of herself. Fortunately, she has a body that can deal with injuries and she finds a way to heal herself and get through them all."

Capital Account jogged on Wednesday in preparation for the Sprint. Trainer Bob Baffert said, "Capital Account is ready. So ready. But you need a lot of luck with a horse like him. He's coming from the back and you need some luck."

Class Included galloped 1 1/2m under exercise rider Donny Smith in preparation for the Ladies Classic. Kay Cooper, daughter and assistant to trainer Jim Penney said, "She loves it down here. She loves the ambiance at Santa Anita, the big crowd and all of the excitement. She's thriving in this environment and is doing awesome. I know that this is a very tough race, her toughest yet. And I know that she's going to try her best. What I don't know is just how good our filly is, because she has always done everything so easy."

Corporate Jungle galloped 1 1/2m on the main track Wednesday morning for trainer Chad Brown in preparation for the Turf Sprint. Brown said, "He seems to be a little bit of a headstrong horse and can be a touch rank at a mile anyway. Maybe the pace of a shorter race will give him a target to run at where he won't be pulling the rider so much. Also, it was very attractive to get the firm turf here at Santa Anita, which is so hard for us to get up in the northeast on a regular basis. He's a horse that really prefers firm ground. I think he has a shot in that race."

Dry Summer galloped Wednesday in preparation for the Juvenile Turf.

Dullahan galloped down the hillside turf chute and across the main track in preparation for the Turf. "The main thing I wanted was for them to get a feel of the downhill and see the dirt course, so they don't jump it," said trainer Dale Romans.

Fantastic Moon cantered on the main track in preparation for the Juvenile Turf, in company with stablemate The Gold Cheongsam.

Fast Bullet jogged on Wednesday in preparation for the Sprint. Trainer Bob Baffert said, "Fast Bullet will be on the lead. Oh, yeah, he'll be there. Maybe you'll see a 43 4/5 half. It'll depend on the track. We will see how fast it is that day. The last time they ran the Sprint here it wasn't that fast."

Game On Dude went out for a gallop under exercise rider Dana Barnes. Trainer Bob Baffert said of the Classic entrant's jockey Rafael Bejarano, "He knows the horse. You've got to remember, he's been working him all along, just like he works a lot of my horses. He knows him better than most anyone. He used to give Chantal (Sutherland) instructions and help with him when she was riding. He is a real team player. Even when he wasn't riding him, he was willing to help out. How about that - you've got the leading rider around here and he's willing to put his ego aside and be part of our team."

Jaycito jogged Wednesday morning just two days ahead of his start in Friday's Marathon. Trainer Bob Baffert was asked if he thought Jaycito was up to the task of running and winning at 1 3/4m, a half-mile beyond any distance he's tried before. "Well, we'll just have to see," Baffert said. "(Owner Ahmed Zayat) thought the race wasn't the strongest one ever and he thought he'd take a shot. So we'll send him out there and see what happens."

Love and Pride went out for her daily gallop at Santa Anita shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday and continued to train forwardly for Friday's Ladies' Classic. "She seems like she's really thrived since her race here (Zenyatta Stakes)," Mike McCarthy, assistant to trainer Todd Pletcher said. "Obviously (Ladies Classic) is one of the tougher races of the two days of the Cup, if not the toughest, so she'll need to bring her 'A' game. If you want to beat Royal Delta, everybody needs to bring their 'A' game."

Mr. Commons jogged about 1m on the main track at Santa Anita Wednesday under exercise rider Jacqueline Gomez after being shipped from Hollywood Park Tuesday by trainer John Shirreffs for the Filly and Mare Turf. "He's my favorite horse," said Gomez. "The way he moves, he just floats across the ground. You don't feel his feet touch the ground. I've been getting on him for more than a year and we've formed a good bond. He just has so much class."

Ron the Greek galloped 1 1/4 miles in preparation for the Classic. Trainer Bill Mott said, "When Ron the Greek won the Santa Anita Handicap last spring we were excited, of course, knowing that the Breeders' Cup was going to be run here this fall. It's a good sign when they've run the distance and they've run over the track. That's one hurdle out of the way that he's already handled. I know they've changed the racetrack here a little bit in the last few months and have added a little sand. It's probably not exactly the same racetrack surface that he won over, but I'm sure it's somewhat similar."

Snow King did not make the Juvenile Turf field at the pre-entry stage so trainer John Gosden did not enter him. He will go instead in the Juvenile Turf Sprint Preview Stakes on the Saturday undercard.

The Fugue, who will be bidding to give John Gosden his fifth Breeders' Cup victory, did a steady canter for a circuit. William Buick who was on board was happy enough with his filly. "She's very well and I'm happy with her," Buick said. "She's an athletic type, but she's intelligent too – she handled the track and the turns fine and changed her leads too. That's all we asked of her."

Zagora galloped about 1 1/2 mile Wednesday morning for trainer Chad Brown in preparation for the Filly and Mare Turf. "She's filled out and looked strong this year and she's run some really nice races," Brown said. "I know that she won the Diana last year and she hasn't won a grade I yet this year, but I don't think that means she's lost a step. If anything, a couple of her speed numbers are faster this year. We're talking about a horse that has won four graded stakes already this year. That's pretty good."
