Trainer Henry Cecil's group of Father Time, Midday, and Twice Over take a leisurely walk around the track the wrong way after clearing quarantine on Monday morning. |
Santa Anita will host the 26th Breeders' Cup World Championships on Friday and Saturday this week and Monday morning saw a good number of contenders gallop over the track, including several officially timed works. Also some of the foreign horses just exited quarantine today and got to test the surfaces for the first time since arriving. The weather was ideal, as it is expected to be all week, with clear skies allowing a beautiful view of the San Gabriel Mountains in the background. Temperatures during training hours started in the low 60's at dawn, but warmed up to the mid 80's by the time training ended at around 10:30am. The main Pro-Ride synthetic track, a source of complaints from some connections last year including the owner of beaten Classic favorite Curlin, has been tweaked since then and it felt firmer and lacked the "bouncy" texture we noticed during the 2008 Breeders' Cup.
Here are photos for 47 of the horses on the track with comments and a link to a profile for each. Click the small picture to see a larger version.

Breeders' Cup Entries and Post Positions - for all 14 races with morning line odds and free past performances
Colonel John worked 5/8 in 59 4/5 over the main track under exercise rider Yutta Lang. Trainer Eoin Harty said that Colonel John will run in the Classic and that this was his final workout. Colonel John will be "eased on up to the race", and will have Garrett Gomez aboard on Saturday. |
Mine That Bird worked 5/8 in 1:01 2/5 under jockey Joe Talamo. Trainer Chip Woolley, seen without crutches finally but still walking with a slight limp while, said, "He worked super, really super. I was looking for 1:02, but it was just what we wanted. He really looked good getting over the ground and was just gliding out there. What really has helped him is that they've tightened the track. It's really helped him fire off the ground. He's like a jackrabbit with the way his hind end pushes him forward." Calvin Borel, who was aboard for his Kentucky Derby win, gets the call in the Classic on Saturday. |
Richard's Kid worked in company with stablemate Limestone Edge, getting 1/2 in 47 1/5 under exercise rider Joey Steiner. Trainer Bob Baffert said of his Classic contender, "It wasn't a race, just a little target for him to run at. He's ready, that was just a nice little cruising to keep him fresh. All he runs is the last half of a mile anyways, that's his style, so I don't have to do too much with him." Regular rider Alex Solis retains the mount on Saturday. |
Summer Bird jogged one lap of the main track under exercise rider Leo Atempa. Trainer Tim Ice said, "He's a good shipper. It wasn't a long flight, the trip was pretty easy, and he looked great when he got off the plane. He was feeling too good to leave him in the stall another day, so we just took him out and jogged him." He will have regular rider Kent Desormeaux up for the Classic. |
Twice Over, upset winner of the Champion Stakes at Newmarket last out, exited the 42-hour quarantine then walked one lap the wrong way around the track Monday morning with his stablemates Father Time and Midday for trainer Henry Cecil. He will make his synthetic track debut in the Classic on Saturday. |
Careless Jewel galloped 1 1/2 miles on the main track on Monday under exercise rider Moises Guce. He said, "She's doing beautiful. She went nice and easy." Trainer Josie Carroll is expected to arrive from Woodbine by Tuesday morning to oversee the final preparations of her Ladies Classic entrant. Regular rider Robert Landry, who has been aboard for all of her starts, gets the call on Friday. |
Rainbow View was out on the track at 6:30AM on Monday for trainer John Gosden. She competed in six consecutive Group 1 races in Europe this year, finishing second to Midday in the Nassau Stakes on Aug. 1 at Goodwood and winning the Matron at Leopardstown on Sept. 5 before heading off to North America, finishing second in the E.P. Taylor at Woodbine in her final prep. She makes her main (synthetic) track debut in the Ladies Classic on Friday. |
Allegre worked 5/8 in 1:01 3/5 over the firm turf course around the "dogs" under assistant trainer Colleen Hartford. Trainer and owner Brian Koriner, who purchased the horse privately after finishing 3rd in the W.R. Cluer Memorial Handicap at Turf Paradise said the workout was "very nice. He just cruised around there." Asked about the purchase he said, "He looked like a nice horse and the (Breeders' Cup Turf) looked like it was coming up light. Also, I think he'll be a nice horse around here." New jockey John Velazquez gets the call on Saturday. |
Conduit walked and then galloped on the turf course Monday morning after clearing quarantine, and will attempt to repeat as Breeders' Cup Turf champion. Trainer Sir Michael Stoute will be at Santa Anita on Tuesday, and regular rider Ryan Moore will be aboard the son of Dalakhani on Saturday. |
Presious Passion, winner of the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes, galloped 2 miles on the main track under exercise rider Fernando Espinoza. Trainer Mary Hartmann will arrive from New Jersey on Tuesday, and regular rider Elvis Trujillo will be in the irons on Saturday in the Turf. |
Spanish Moon cleared quarantine Monday morning and went out for a jog over the turf in company with stablemate Zacinto. He is 2 for 3 this year, his lone defeat being a close second in the Dubai Sheema Classic. New jockey Kieren Fallon gets the call in the Turf for trainer Sir Michael Stoute as regular rider Ryan Moore will be aboard Conduit. |
Dynaforce galloped on the main track under assistant trainer Leanna Wilford in preparation for the Filly and Mare Turf. Regular rider Kent Desormeaux will be aboard the 6-year-old daughter of Dynaformer on Friday for trainer Bill Mott. |
Midday walked one lap the wrong way around the track Monday morning with his stablemates Father Time and Twice Around for trainer Henry Cecil after clearing quarantine. The Nassau Stakes winner arrived in California on Saturday. |
Rutherienne arrived from New York on Saturday and went out for a jog on the main track on Monday. Trainer Christophe Clement said, "It's ambitious, it's the Breeders' Cup, but she hasn't run too many bad races in her life and I think she'll stay a mile and a quarter over that turf course because it's downhill." Regular rider Alan Garcia gets the call in the Filly and Mare Turf on Friday. |
Kodiak Kowboy breezed 1/2 mile in 52 1/5 but when scoped after the work, was scratched from the Sprint. Scott Blasi, assistant to trainer Steve Asmussen said, "He worked well, but scoped bad. He has to go on antibiotics and will be unable to run." |
Zensational worked a bullet 4 furlongs in 45 1/5 on Monday morning in preparation for the Sprint. Trainer Bob Baffert said, "He really he knows he's getting ready to run. He's enjoying what he's doing right now and he's ready and strong. You know, I've been trying to slow him down but he just does it so effortlessly, he's just incredible, he's just a fast horse. He was born that way, I didn't do it to him." |
Evita Argentina jogged 1 lap of the main track on Monday in preparation for the Filly and Mare Sprint. Trainer John Sadler said, "She'll gallop up to the race from here. My one concern with the race is whether there will be enough speed in there to give my filly a chance. Last year they had Indian Blessing and Dearest Trickski in there to get it going, but they're not around this time." Regular rider Joel Rosario will be in the irons on Friday. |
Canadian Ballet jogged on the main track in preparation for the Turf Sprint. He is first on the preference list and will need help to draw into the field. |
Cannonball jogged 1 mile on the main track Monday after working a bullet 5/8 in 59 2/5 on the turf on Sunday. Blake Heap, assistant to trainer Wesley Ward said, "He worked awesome. He couldn't do any better." Ramon Dominguez will be in the irons in the Turf Sprint on Saturday. |
Desert Code galloped 1 1/2 miles on the training track Monday morning in preparation for his title defense in the Turf Sprint. Trainer David Hofmans said, "His last race was a good one. Actually, it was a better race for him than the one he ran in that race (Morvich) last year. He loves the course and he loves the distance. So we're ready to roll." Regular rider Richard Migliore will be in the irons on Saturday. |
Square Eddie galloped on Monday morning on the main track. Trainer Doug O'Neill said, "We're doing great. We'll be coming down that hill (in the Turf Sprint), we've got Frankie (Dettori) to ride and the horse is feeling good. We're in gallop mode." Square Eddie had worked 3/4 at Santa Anita Saturday in 1:13 2/5. |
Courageous Cat worked 5 furlongs over firm turf in 1:01 around the dogs under new jockey Garrett Gomez. Trainer Bill Mott said, "It looked OK. He's doing fine." The Mile will be Gomez' first time aboard the winner of the Hall of Fame Stakes at Saratoga. He has been ridden by four different riders in his first seven starts. |
Justenuffhumor galloped 1 1/2 miles on the main track under exercise rider Danny Wright. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said from New York, "We hope (the loss at Keeneland) was the soft turf. The Keeneland turf course is a different kind of course anyway because of the sand base. That's what we're going to tell the world all week heading into the race. His only two bad races were at Keeneland. Last year, he didn't like the artificial track and this year he didn't like the soft turf. Everything in between he liked." Regular rider Alan Garcia will retain the mount in Saturday's Mile. |
Zacinto was out for a walk then a jog on the turf course with Michael Stoute-trained stablemates Conduit and Spanish Moon after clearing quarantine Monday morning. He finished second behind Rip Van Winkle in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot most recently. Regular rider Ryan Moore has the mount in Saturday's Mile. |
Bullsbay breezed 5/8 in company in 1:01 3/5 under jockey Jeremy Rose on Monday morning. Trainer Graham Motion said, "It was exactly what he did before the Whitney, so we have to be happy with it. He's not a flashy worker; he never has been. Jeremy said he got over the track very well. Is he as good on the synthetic as he is on dirt? That's the big question mark. If the Classic were on the dirt, I think that's where we'd be running." Rose will be aboard for the Dirt Mile. |
Mambo Meister galloped 1 lap of the main track in preparation for the Dirt Mile. Trainer Phil Gleaves said, "You don't know until we get him out there and run him on it, but the general consensus is that turf horses react well to this Pro-Ride. That's key. We'll breeze him (Tuesday). We galloped him over it, and he seemed like he handled it but you don't really know until you see them at speed and how he gets over it at speed." |
Aspire worked a half in 47 seconds under exercise rider Georgiana Baxter. "He's doing well," said trainer Eddie Kenneally, who arrives himself on Wednesday. "Georgiana said he went super." Julien Leparoux will be in the irons on Saturday for the Juvenile. |
Lookin At Lucky breezed 4f in 47 1/5 in his final work before the Juvenile. Trainer Bob Baffert said, "That was just a little work, he's been ready. He's really fit right now and I want to keep him happy; the distance is not a problem. As long as they don't have distance limitations, you don't have to worry. That's the fun part about him." Regular rider Garrett Gomez will be aboard again on Saturday. |
Piscitelli, named after the barber of owner William Schettine, galloped on Monday morning under exercise rider Angel Rangel, in preparation for the Juvenile. "He's doing great," said Rick Sacco, brother of trainer Gregg Sacco and the racing manager for the owner. "He went nice and easy and he'll only gallop up to the race. He breezed six furlongs in 1:17 at Keeneland (over the synthetic surface) on Friday and flew in on Saturday. Everything's good." |
Pulsion jogged Monday under exercise rider Daron Long after working 5/8 in 1:02 3/5 on Sunday. "His work was exactly what we wanted," said Chris Crowe, assistant to trainer Patrick Biancone. "All is good with him." Mike Smith will be aboard for the Juvenile. |
William's Kitten worked 4f in 46 2/5 under exercise rider Derek Smith. Trainer Mike Maker said, "He's fit and didn't need a whole lot. He did it well within himself. If he gets in, Ramon Dominguez will ride. He ran a creditable race on Polytrack in the Grey at Woodbine, and didn't have the greatest of trips." He is currently third on the preference list for the Juvenile. |
Becky's Kitten galloped on the main track Monday under exercise rider Roberto Sistio after working 5/8 in 1 minute flat on Sunday. Blake Heap, assistant to trainer Wesley Ward said, "He worked just great." Regular rider Julien Leparoux will be in the irons for the Juvenile Turf. |

Zilva was out for a 1 mile jog Monday under exercise rider Alice Chapham after working a half in 48 4/5 on Saturday. She will start in the Juvenile Fillies for trainer Graham Motion. Motion said, "If for some reason Smart Seattle couldn't run in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, I'd run Zilva on the turf. But I wasn't planning on running them together." |
Elusive Galaxy galloped 1 1/4 miles on Monday morning. Trainer Ben Cecil said of his Juvenile Fillies Turf entrant, "We bought her just before the Canadian race (Natalma), and she just came back blowing really hard. She ought to be fine now." She worked 1:02 1/5 on Saturday under regular rider Rafael Bejarano, who retains the mount on Friday. |

Smart Seattle galloped once around the track under exercise rider Alice Clapham in preparation for the Juvenile Fillies Turf. "I don't think she lost anything in defeat. I'd like to think if you switched trips, if we had the trip the winner had, we'd have the same result," trainer Graham Motion said. "I don't want to take anything away from the winner. It's just one of those deals where she followed us all the way around and just nailed us at the wire." |
Tapitsfly was out for a jog on the main track Monday after working 5 furlongs under Aaron Gryder in 1:00 3/5, out in 1:12 on Saturday for trainer Dale Romans. Robby Albarado gets the call for trainer Dale Romans in the Juvenile Fillies Turf. |

Ryan rode the son of Chester House in the Dubai World Cup. |
