Sands of Mali and Cotai Glory wait to go onto the turf course for their gallops. |
Wednesday morning was brighter than previously this week, but still overcast. It was also a bit warmer than earlier in the week, and I actually took my jacket off for most of the morning. Some of the Baffert horses were out, but they didn't have their name cloths on. Apparently Arrogate and Mubtaajih came out well before sunrise, so we missed them. Tomorrow the last of the quarantine horses will finally come out, including 13 for Aidan O'Brien, and all the Breeders' Cup runners should be here.
Here are photos for 43 of the horses on the track Wednesday morning, mostly different from Monday and Tuesday. Click the small picture to see a larger version.
West Coast (Classic) galloped 1 1/4 miles with exercise rider Dana Barnes. “Everything’s fine. It’s all good,” trainer Bob Baffert said. “No surprises. Everything is smooth. Nothing has changed. They shipped well. They got here and they all looked happy on the track. That’s all that matters.”
Collected galloped 1 1/2 miles with exercise rider Augustine Laura, shortly after stablemate West Coast.
Gunnevera (Classic) galloped 1 1/2 miles, the last 3/8 in an open gallop under exercise rider Victor O’Farrel. “He did it very easy. He was really striding out,” trainer Antonio Sano said. “My horse is a very fresh horse. I
really like my horse. My horse is better now than at Saratoga. He has gained weight and is in the best condition,”
Win The Space (Classic) jogged 1 mile over the Del Mar main track the second day after he put in his final workout Monday. The roan showed a laid-back attitude as he walked during warm-ups before heading to the track. That brought a bit of a chuckle and a small smile from trainer George Papaprodromou. “He wakes up when he gets to the track,” the native of Cyprus said. “He’s pretty aggressivethen.”
Abel Tasman (Distaff) galloped 1 1/4 mile under Dana Barnes. Trainer Bob Baffert watched the filly train from the front side and said everything was going fine with her preparations for the race.
Elate (Distaff) went through the paddock en route to an easy mile gallop over the Del Mar main track. “She just had an easy morning,” assistant trainer Riley Mott said. “She went through the paddock and galloped and came back. She’s happy. She covers a lot of ground with that big stride and likes the track. She’s a laid-back filly, but she can be stubborn sometimes. She’s smart. She recognizes people and decides who she does and doesn’t like.”
Paradise Woods (Distaff) schooled in the starting gate and paddock before galloping 1 1/2 miles. Longtime Mandella exercise rider Janeen Painter was up for the morning exercise and Flavien Prat, the only jockey the filly has known, will ride for the seventh time.
Accelerate (Dirt Mile) galloped twice around the morning after shipping in from Santa Anita.
Ami's Mesa (Filly and Mare Sprint) galloped twice around. Trainer Josie Carroll said, “She had a 12-hour van ride to Louisville (from Toronto) just to get to the plne. When we came out yesterday morning, it was 50-50 whether she would go out and she was sound asleep in the stall, so that was that. The only question for her is the dirt. She breezed a couple of times on it and breezed well, but she runs on the all-weather, so why switch? She won’t get any dirt in her face right off the bat (from post 14)."
Battle of Midway (Dirt Mile) went our for a jog on the main track for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.
Beckford (Juvenile Turf) cantered on the turf course for trainer Gordon Elliott.
Blackjackcat (Mile) went out for a canter for trainer Mark Glatt. Kent Desormeaux rides on Saturday.
Bolt D'Oro (Juvenile) galloped 1 1/2 miles under exercise rider Carlos Aguilar. Owner-trainer Mick Ruis said, “He’s stretching out good; he’s happy. That’s all we want going into the race, having him super happy and showing he right where we need him to be.”
Caledonia Road (Juvenile Fillies) galloped on the main track for trainer Ralph Nicks. Mike Smith gets the call Saturday.
Cotai Glory (Turf Sprint) galloped once around the turf course for trainer Charlie Hills.
Curlin's Approval (Filly and Mare Sprint) galloped once around. Owner Happy Alter said, “In the Princess Rooney, she ran the three-quarters in 1:09-and-change and finished up in 1:21-and-change. I don’t think you see that in many past performances.”
Decorated Knight (Turf) galloped on the main track for trainer Roger Charlton.
Disco Partner (Turf Sprint) jogged on the main track. Irad Ortiz Jr. rides Saturday for trainer Christophe Clement.
Dixie Moon (Juvenile Fillies Turf) galloped twice around for trainer Catherine Day-Phillips. Regular rider Eurico Da Silva gets the call Friday.
Encumbered (Juvenile Turf) galloped once around for trainer Simon Callaghan. Mario Gutierrez rides Friday.
Fatale Bere (Juvenile Fillies Turf) galioped once around for trainer Leonard Powell.
Finley's Lucky Charm (Filly and Mare Sprint) galloped 1 1/2 mile before the morning renovation break with Sara Calhoun aboard for her husband, trainer Bret Calhoun. “The first time out, you don’t think you are going to have a Breeders’ Cup horse,” Brer Calhoun said.
“But after she came back, we started planning for this. Anytime you come out to California to take on these sprinters and run well, it boosts your confidence."
Gato Del Oro (Dirt Mile) went out for a gallop on the main track. On friday Jose Ortiz rides for trainer Richard Baltas.
Givemeaminit (Juvenile) was out on the main track on Wednesday for trainer Dallas Stewart. Stewart said, “Those couple of races at Saratoga were very good. We got beaten by some nice horses. Free Drop Billy is a good horse and we ran very competitively with him. Looking at our last race, the Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland, we had some trouble. Brian Hernandez had to avoid the horse who got injured. Having said that, we thought he deserved another shot at the big time. He should get better as he matures and he’s shipped good."
Holding Gold (Turf Sprint) galloped once around for trainer Mark Casse.
Iron Fist (Dirt Mile) was sent out for a gallop by trainer Steve Asmussen.
Itsinthepost (Turf) galloped twice around the main track for trainer Jeff Mullins.
James Garfield (Juvenile Turf) galloped once around the turf course. Trainer George Scott said, “He’s in great form, he had a spin round the bend this morning, and he handled it well. He’s a handy horse, so you’d expect him to. He’s a happy horse right now, and let’s hope everything keeps going to plan.”
Juliet Capulet (Juvenile Fillies Turf) galloped once around the turf for trainer John Gosden.
Lady Aurelia (Turf Sprint) jogged once around the turf course in the clockwise direction. “She’s great and truly special horse,” trainer Wesley Ward said. “They have to have a lot of factors go their way
(to travel as she has). They have to have fantastic owners who give the trainer the leverage to stop when
they need to stop and let you go to certain races. It’s key to have a chance to let the horse take you there,
instead of you taking them there. The trainer has to be able to aim for something long-range and try to
achieve that goal. Then, hopefully, the horse can bring you there.
“We don’t want to send her (to the lead)."
Midnight Storm (Mile) went twice around for trainer Phil D'Amato. Tyler Baze rides on Saturday.

Rajasinghe (Juvenile Turf) cantered once around the turf course.
Ransom the Moon (Sprint) went once around for trainer Phil D'Amato.
Sands of Mali (Juvenile Turf) cantered once around the turf course for trainer Richard Fahey,
Skye Diamonds (Filly and Mare Sprint) galloped once around. Trainer Bill Spawr said, “I was thinking that she could win a Cal-bred condition race or two and be useful. But, I'm really surprised that she has come this far and is a Breeders' Cup contender. You know, with horses like this you can have some hiccups, but I’ve had no hiccups with her. She has been perfect.”
Snapper Sinclair (Juvenile Turf) went out for a gallop for trainer STeve Asmussen.
Takaful (Sprint) galloped once around for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.
Tap Daddy (Juvenile Turf) is the first also-eligible, with Florent Geroux scheduled to ride for Steve Asmussen.
Unique Bella (Filly and Mare Sprint) schooled in the paddock and galloped twice around. Dan Ward, assistant to trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said, “We’ve had enough time to get her ready. I don’t know that we would be as confident running 1 1/8 miles in the Distaff off that one sprint, but yeah, she’s ready. She’ll get a lot out of that prep because it’s like three works. It worked out perfect. The filly is
doing very good.”
