Review: Black Winning Jockeys in the Kentucky Derby
Black athletes are the norm rather than the exception in today's
world of professional sports, however in racing they are conspicuous
by their near-absence. Find out more about the times when this was
was not the case in this excellent new book.

Spend A Buck dies
LMWISH writes, "The winner of the 1985 Derby (fourth fastest time) died
in November. His connections caused quite a stir by going for the Jersey
Derby Bonus instead of the Triple Crown, quite a story. I hope the horse
is at peace now though, because everything I have ever read convinces me
that his welfare was never the real concern of his connections."

From Trainers' Lips
EARLY11 writes, "The explanations and excuses trainers come up with after
their horse's lose! Joe Orseno should get an Eclipse Award for his typical
'reasoning'. Of course, it is never the trainer's fault or the fact that
the horse maybe just wasn't good enough. Joe offered up this gem after Red
Bullet ran second last in the Cigar Mile: 'The plan going in was to just
sit and make one, good run. But with those fractions, they never backed
up.' Sorry Joe, they went 44 and change, 1:08 and change. Aren't those
fractions good enough to set up some sort of late run?"
