American "Handicaps" are a joke
BLUEGRASSGUY writes, "Racing exists because there is wagering, no
wagering, no racing. If there was no "handicap" the really good horses
would win all the time and the tracks would suffer losses at the window."
EARLY11 replies, "I really doubt that today the handicap is responsible for
higher wagering. At equal weights the chalk might be even 'chalkier', but they
would still lose a good percentage of the time and then the payoffs would be
even better on the other horses."

More early Derby picks
RAESFAN writes, "That's leaves Siberland as my darkhorse Derby pick. In the
past two years I have gone to Turf Paradise for some longshot picks, coming up
with Startac and Captain Squire. Although neither made much noise on the Derby
trail, they both have gone on to make a mark. I will look at the winner of the
Turf Paradise Derby again this year, and hopefully, that horse will be
Siberland who is a better dirt candidate than Startac, and looks to be a able
to get a distance of ground."
