Winning jockey James McDonald gets interviewed aboard Voyage Bubble after winning the Hong Kong Mile |
In the HK$36 million (US$4.62 million) Longines Hong Kong Mile (G1), the world's richest turf mile race, a full field of 14 older horses went to post for the 1600 meter (about 1 mile) trip around one turn of the Sha Tin turf. Last year's runner-up Voyage Bubble was sent off as the 8-5 favorite off his win in the Jockey Club Mile (G2). In to challenge him included 7-2 second choice Soul Rush, winner of the Mile Championship (G1) at Kyoto, and 9-2 third choice Galaxy Patch, winner of the Sha Tin Trophy (G2) before finishing third in the Jockey Club Mile.
Jockey Zac Purton sent 18-1 Beauty Eternal to the lead out of the chute through fractions of 24.70, and 47.02 while pressed by Voyage Bubble and stalked by Jantar Mantar. Turning for home, jockey James McDonald sent Voyage Bubble to the front through 3/4 in 1:10.30. Voyage Bubble drew off late to win by 1 1/4 lengths over late-running Soul Rush in 1:33.34. It was another 1/2 a length back to 100-1 Beauty Joy third.

Left: Voyage Bubble in the winner's circle. Winning trainer Ricky Yiu said, "Mentally he is a lot more mature. He's very smart and he's developed – he's gotten taller and a little bit bigger. He has enjoyed Conghua very much."
Right: Voyage Bubble heads back to the barn. Winning jockey James McDonald said, "He's (Voyage Bubble) a great horse in his own right. He felt excellent going to the gates today – he was really on the job. Credit to Ricky and his team – they've prepped him up beautifully. He just gives his all. He has a very big heart and he's very uncomplicated."
