Country music star LeAnn Rimes sang the national anthem before the Kentucky Derby, starting a new tradition. This was the first live vocal performance of the "Star Spangled Banner" by a national recording artist on Derby Day and something they plan to do each year now.

Trainer Bennie Woolley Jr. and his girlfriend Kim Carr start walking to the backside in the mud after the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic to prepare Mine That Bird for the walkover to the paddock for the Derby. He has been on crutches since an accident in March that left him with 12 fractures from his knee to his ankle. He also tripped and fell at the media/VIP party Thursday night and re-fractured one of his bones. Maybe now his luck has changed? Oaks day it rained the night before and that evening, but during the day there was a bit of sun. Here is a look at the post parade for the American Turf as seen from near the finish on the turf course.	Derby day it rained the night before and stayed overcast and chilly all day. Here is a look at the post parade for the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic from the opposite direction, across from the tunnel to the track.
A new larger-than-life bronze statue of 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was unveiled at Churchill Downs near Gate 1 and the Derby Museum on April 26. The statue will become the focal point of Barbaro's official memorial and burial site at Churchill Downs (his ashes are interred beneath the bronze's base). The 1500 pound statue was sculpted by Alexa King and shows Barbaro in full flight with all four feet off the ground. Many of his fans had placed flowers on the base for him. Sunday after the Derby, the owners of winner Mine That Bird put his rose blanket there as well and gave some roses to the fans there.

They used to put red tulips around it on Derby day, but now they have red rose bushes instead. Behind him you can see the statue of jockey Pat Day, the all time winningest jockey at Churchill Downs.

The horses go down the stretch for the first time shortly after the start of the Kentucky Derby.	The track was quite muddy on Saturday from all the rain recently as you can see from jockey Robby Albarado's face after finishing last in the Churchill Downs Stakes aboard Ide Like a Double.
The announcement of I Want Revenge being scratched on Saturday morning at 9am. From left to right are: Dr. Larry Bramlege, Dr. Foster Northrup, trainer Jeff Mullins, jockey Joe Talamo, co-owner David Lanzman and his wife Desiree. Later an ultrasound and MRI showed additional ligament damage and a much more serious injury than originally though. More tests will be performed, but Dr. Northrop sais, "Part of the prognosis is determined by the horse's response to therapy, but this is a serious injury, and depending on his progress, could be career-threatening."

One of the many mint julep vendors roaming the stands on Saturday. This year a mint julep was $9.00 and a beer was $7.00!	This robin was sitting on a teletimer sensor on the turf course shortly before the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic. He took off just before the race started.
