Monday Kentucky Derby Photos

Date: 04/28/2009

While some of the Kentucky Derby and Oaks horses are already at Churchill Downs, many won't arrive until this week. Here are a few photos from Friday, April 25, and Monday, April 28, courtesy of EquiSportPhotos.com. I will arrive in Louisville tomorrow evening, so look for more starting Wednesday.

Adriano visited the paddock and starting gate before galloping a mile and a half Friday under Xavier Aizpuru after the renovation break. "He never has had any problems at the gate and this is just a precaution," said Alice Clapham, assistant to trainer Graham Motion. "As long as the opportunity is there, we may as well take advantage of it."

Colonel John galloped a mile and a half Friday under Karine Lhuillier after the renovation break. Colonel John is one three Kentucky Derby hopefuls to be undefeated in 2009, winning the Santa Anita Derby and the Sham Stakes. He has made all six of his lifetime starts on synthetic tracks.

Denis of Cork worked a half-mile on Monday in :48 under jockey Calvin Borel over a "fast" track after the renovation break. Trainer David Carroll said, "He worked so good. Nothing this horse does surprises me." The work that was the fifth fastest of 44 at the distance Monday morning. Splits on the work were :12.80, :25, :36.80 and out five furlongs in 1:00.20.

Recapturetheglory galloped two miles on Monday morning. Trainer Louie Roussel III said, "Everybody says he's a longshot. As a trainer, you want to see them get better. There's an old saying, 'the women get better looking at closing time.' You kind of play mind games with yourself – is he good enough, isn't he good enough?" Rousell and co-owner Ronnie Lamarque also owned Risen Star who was third in the 1988 Derby and won the Preakness and Belmont.

Visionaire turned in his final Derby 134 workout Monday morning under jockey Jose Lezcano. The Gotham winner drilled a half-mile just after the renovation break in :48.40, ranking 11th fastest of 33 at the distance. Trainer Michael Matz said, "He just needed a little target to go at; he's not a very good work horse. They don't give away money for works before the race."

Z Fortune galloped a mile and a quarter on Friday under exercise rider Carmen Rosas. Z Fortune "shows his youth," trainer Steve Asmussen said, and his leggy nature makes him a "great, big Ichabod Crane character." The colt's hard effort when second in the Arkansas Derby was encouraging as to the horse's talents, but is "a huge concern for us, a lifetime best with a big, leggy horse (having to run) three weeks later," Asmussen said.

Kentucky Oaks contender Awesome Chic galloped 1/2 miles at Churchill Downs on Monday under exercise rider Ariel Carrasquillo. Trainer Rafael Ramos and owner Jose Acero were present. wesome Chic won the Grade III Florida Oaks at Tampa last out.
