Notes: Dortmund won a maiden race at Santa Anita, an optional claimer at Churchill Downs, and the Los Alamitos Futurity (G1) as a 2-year-old, followed by his 3-year-old debut February 7 in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes. He followed that with impressive wins in the San Felipe Stakes (G2) and the Santa Anita Derby (G1). He was the second choice in the Kentucky Derby and set the pace before fading to finish 3rd. Faded to 4th in the Preakness Stakes and didn't race again until October. He made his comeback a winning one in the Big Bear Stakes at Santa Anita and followed up with a win in the Native Diver Stakes (G3) at Del Mar in November.
He made his 2016 debut in July finishing 2nd in the San Diego Handicap at Del Mar, then was 3rd in the Pacific Classic also at Del Mar He was 2nd behind California Chrome in the Awesome Again Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita for his final prep.
