In 1996, Toronto Sun journalist Perry Lefko released The Greatest Show on Turf: A History of the Breeders' Cup, which featured articles and photographs of the equine and human luminaries who combined to make the now-dubbed World Thoroughbred Championships the spectacle it is today. The book was well-received, having been released in time for the 13th Breeders' Cup which was held at Woodbine that year, and was the first book written on the history of racing's Championship Day.
To celebrate the 20th running of the Breeders' Cup, to be contested this October 25th at Santa Anita, Lefko is re-doing the book to be released in September or October. The book will likely have a new name, a new cover and several new chapters, while the previous chapters will be updated. The new name and cover will also represent the name change of the Breeders' Cup to the World Thoroughbred Championships, which occurred in 2001. Some of the new material will include chapters on the 2002 Breeders' Cup, the Pick 6 Scandal, the record Pick 6 won by a syndicate in 1999, Frankie Dettori, Bobby Frankel and more.
As Lefko did for the 1996 version, he would like to augment his chapter about the greatest Breeders' Cup race of all time with feedback from fans. Back then, members of the Derby List emailed him their picks with the reasons for them and many were published in the book. He encourages anybody who submitted their choices in 1996 to do so again if they have new choices since then. In addition, anyone else who would like to submit their choice, here is your opportunity to do so. Please send submissions to email@example.com and include your name, where you are from (i.e. Joe Smith, Los Angeles, California, USA), and where you heard about this. Entries will be edited and may be shortened for space considerations. Put some time and thought into it because this could be your chance to be published.
