The $150,000 Sea O'Erin Breeders' Cup Mile Handicap featured older horses going about 1 mile on the inner turf course (the Grade 1 events were contested around the main, outer course). 17-1 shot Spotsgone opened up an uncontested lead and set easy fractions of 23.84, 49.05, and 1:14.37 while as many as 2 1/2 lengths clear of 8-1 Obi Wan Kenobi in second. Entering the stretch, 60-year-old jockey Earlie Fires asked him for more run and he got it, as Spostgone pulled away to a 4 length lead at the 1/8 pole. 2-1 favorite Galantas put in a strong rally down the center of the course late but was left with too much ground to make up, as Spotsgone held him off by a head at the line, completing the trip in 1:38.10 over the yielding course. It was another 2 1/2 lengths back to 21-1 Load A Chronic in third.

Spotsgone in the winner's circle. Winning trainer William H. Fires, brother of the winning rider, said, "We knew he’d run well but weren’t so sure about the turf. The turf’s a little wet today and speed seems to hold."
