Update: Sunday Silence is gone. He died August 19th of heart failure. More.

Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic winner Sunday Silence is fighting what appears to be a losing battle for his life. The leading sire in Japan has been ill for quite some time at his home in Shadai Stallion Station. He has had three surgeries so far trying to heal a bacterial infection in the tendon of his right leg. As so often happens with leg injuries in horses, he has developed laminitis in both front feet and is showing signs of it in his rear feet as well. He is currently able to stand, but it is feared if he lays down he won't be able to get up again.

Farm spokeman Eisuke Tokutake told the Blood Horse: "I wouldn't say we've given up on him. But, the pain is going to get worse and I would say that we do feel that it isn't right to have him continue fighting this. I think he could go on like this for a while yet. The question really is when we are going to have to say, it's enough." It is speculated that he may have to be euthanized within a week if he doesn't start to improve.

His rivalry with Easy Goer has long been a favorite topic of debate among racing fans and he has many admirers still, even though it has been nearly 13 years since he raced. I know we all are hoping for his recovery so say a little prayer for him tonight.
