Ladies' Weekend at Saratoga

You winning the Frizette last year at Belmont. She will be in the Test Stakes on Saturday.
Date: 07/24/02

Three graded stakes for fillies and mares highlight opening weekend at Saratoga Racecourse. On Saturday, Saratoga will feature the $500,000, Grade 2 Diana Handicap for three-year-olds and up fillies and mares going a mile and an eighth over the turf course. Green Hills Farm's Voodoo Dancer will challenge Joseph Platt Jr.'s Babae and Juddmonte Farms Tates Creek. Voodoo Dancer, the highweight at 120 pounds, has not raced since winning the Locust Grove Handicap at Churchill Downs on June 22. Babae is a winner of two stakes this year and finished third to Voodoo Dancer in the Grade 3 Beaugay Handicap earlier this year at Aqueduct. Tates Creek was beaten a neck by Babae in the Grade 3 Just the Game Breeders' Cup Handicap at Belmont in June. Both Babae and Tates Creek will carry 117 pounds for the Diana.

Also on Saturday is the $250,000, Grade 1 Test Stakes for three-year-olds fillies at seven furlongs. Hemlock Hills Farm's Carson Hollow looks to keep her unbeaten streak intact as she challenges Edmund Gann's You and Hardacre Farm's Bold World. Carson Hollow has won four straight, including her last race in the Grade 1 Prioress at Belmont on July 6 when she defeated Spring Meadow and Proper Gamble. But she will have another class test with multiple Grade 1 stakes winner You in the race. The lone blemish on You's record this year was in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks where she finished fourth on May 3. Besides that race, You easily won the Grade 1 Acorn at Belmont Park, the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oakes and the Grade 1 Las Virgenes.

Sunday's feature is the $250,000 Grade 1 Go For Wand Handicap for older fillies and mares racing a mile and an eighth. Last year's Grade 1 Spinster winner Miss Linda is the highweight at 119 pounds. She has not raced since finishing third in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn Park on April 6. Expected to compete against Miss Linda are Dancethruthedawn, Atelier, Forest Secrets, With Ability, Transcendental and Too Scarlet. Dancethruthedawn comes in from Canada and has finished no worse than third in three races this year. Atelier won the Grade 2 Molly Pitcher Handicap in her last race. With Ability won a pair of Grade 3 races before finishing second in the Grade 2 Fleur de Lis Handicap at Churchill Downs on June 15.
